“You do not take a person who, for years, has been hobbled by chains and liberate him, bring him up to the starting line of a race and say, ‘you are now free to compete with all the others,’ and still justly believe that you have been completely fair.” (LBJ, 1965) Affirmative action was initially meant to compensate for the years of institutional discrimination and help equal the playing field for people of color. …….. Colleges have to meet a certain requirement of people who are a certain race or minority. Colleges also have a certain percentage of seats in the college that they can admit students in to. So in order to fill their quotas, the colleges have to consider race as a factor into admitting a student into their facility or not. There are some people out there that say that affirmative action is not effective but it has been shown that it can work. “Since the late 1980s, students of color have increased their total college enrollment by 57.2 percent, and the proportion of women earning bachelor’s degrees is increasing steadily” (civilrights.org) This is statistical evidence of progress that students of color and females are getting better opportunities and that affirmative action is giving them better chances to be able to better their educations. Without affirmative action, the educators would still be able to have their prejudices impact the college admissions process.
