Affects Of PED Use In Sports
PED’s (performance enhancing drugs) have the ability to dramatically alter a person’s body and biological functions. There are many different kinds of PED’s available for use. One popular kind of PED are anabolic steroids. On the bright side, these steroids are used by doctors to treat muscle-wasting diseases such as an HIV infection. But on the other hand anabolic are used by athletes to gain an edge on there opponents. Anabolic’s are used to boost a persons testosterone. But there are also many things that make this type of PED very dangerous. The way it works is an athlete takes it, and EPO boosts their cardio vascular performance by creating more red blood cells. By creating more red bloods cells, even though it sounds helpful, causes blood thickening when the athlete is not exercising. In order to prevent a heart attack when using EPO, the athlete most exercise every couple of hours to thin out their blood. The possible affects EPO has on an athlete are anemia, strokes, heart attacks, pulmonary embolism, leukemia and other blood cancers, and hypertension.
The affects of PED’s are most noticeable after an athlete retires.
When an athlete is on PED’s their body is being given excess amounts of a substance that their body already produces. Their body Then thinks that it doesn’t have to produce a large amount of that particular substance. Then when the athlete stops using PED’s their body doesn’t perform well in competition because their body has become so dependent on the PED’s, that it will have shut down production of a certain biological substance. In order for the athlete to then return their biological levels to normal they must use more drugs and medical aids to jump start their
