Some considerations to make when counseling women suffering from addiction, are that they are most likely to suffer from affective disorders such as depression and anxiety. Women often begin abusing substances following a traumatic event. Another considerations to make is that alcoholic women are five times more likely to attempt suicide than are nonalcoholic women. Also women are more likely than men to experience sexual dysfunction, bulimia, and low self-esteem.

They may also be Alienation from friends and family due to sexual orientation stigma and addictive behavior. Collateral issues may include alienation from family, multiple identity management issues, trauma issues, HIV/AIDS, suicide potential, domestic violence, trust issues, and parenting issues.
