Aetna is a diversified health insurance company that provides life, health, dental, vision, disability, and long-term care insurance as well as retirement savings products. Its main business is healthcare. Aetna also has multiple subsidiaries including Aetna Specialty Pharmacy, the Chickering Group, Aetna Global Benefits, and Active Health just to name a few. Insurers compete over membership, prices, and offerings. Recent Health Care Reform significantly increased the number of individuals looking for insurance; however, the government did place limitations on the prices insurance companies can charge. Getting the right quantity of members mixed with the right quality of members is important. Health insurance is a highly competitive field. Aetna sees its competition nationally as UnitedHealth, Anthem, Humana, Cigna and WellCare; however, many smaller independent Blue plans for example are highly competitive in regional/state …show more content…
When Aetna acquired Coventry, it had to make a decision as to whether to change the name to Aetna or leave it as Coventry. Because Coventry was widely popular in the areas it serviced, Aetna decided to leave them mainly named as Coventry plans, but also updated those names to include co-branding of Aetna. While it known that Aetna is set to acquire Humana, it is very possible, that Humana will be branded much like Coventry plans have in that the Humana name will largely remain prominent, but will also include Aetna.
Conclusion
Success for Aetna will be measured by how they incorporate and react to the many changes resulting from Health Care Reform, much of which is still unknown.
