This was after “Steven Tyler met guitarist Joe Perry while working at a Sunapee, New Hampshire, ice cream parlor” (Erlewine 1). In Rolling Stone magazine, it mentions that after the fact that the group formed in 1970, it was signed into Columbia Records. As Rolling Stone writes, “Clive Davis saw the band perform at Max’s Kansas City in New York and signed them to Columbia” (Rolling Stone 1). Columbia Records, as we learned throughout this semester is one of the biggest music records to sign into and is a huge step to take as an artist looking to step foot in the music industry. From here the band toured around a lot and “its members’ heavy drug use...had begun to take their toll” (1). This was in “1977” when they were “constantly touring” (1). Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, as strictly put, “were nicknamed ‘the Toxic Twins’ for their substance abuse” (1). This was frowned upon by some, such as parents, but was mimicked or imitated by others that may have wanted to fit in or were following the hype that was made about the band during that time.
