Aemilia Lanyer is regarded as potentialy the first woman to create a large volume of poetry, Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum, in 1611. Her work was created with the intention to be printed and to attract patronage. On the surface, Salve Deus was seen as a devotional work of poetry. Under the surface, however, the work reveals itself as less of a devotion and more of a highly dramatic work of exigesis, which envisions a post-apocolyptic world. Lanyer gives a new perspective in her works, writing from a female point of view. This is shown in her story of Christ’s passions. For this reason, Lanyers work is not only widely regarded as works of art, but also large contributions to feminist writings. The work of poems is the first true feminist publication in England. As a post on Poetry Foundation states, “all of the work’s dedicatees are women, the poem on the Passion specifically argues the virtues of women as opposed to the vices of men, and Lanyer’s own authorial voice is assured and unapologetic.” …show more content…

Alice Notley’s The Descent of Alette is an epic poem that shows the relationship between gender, sex, and the human body. By doing so, Notley challenges the traditional form of an epic poem through her use of a female hero and a series of lyric poems that create an epic poem. Here, we see two sets of binaries: female hero/male hero and lyric poem/epic poem. Additionally, these binaries are a function of hierarchy. By resisting traditional binaries, Notley shows equality through an open space for equal heterogeneous forms.…

Marie De France’s uncanny, whimsically lai “Lanval” satirically challenges and reverses the themes of love through stereotypical gender roles, which are unique and romanticized to traditions of the 12th century. Women for eternity have been rendered as beautiful, physical objects, who where inferior to men, and needed nothing more then a body. Marie De France depicted these same stereotypes in her writing but just in a reverse methodology. She criticizes the stereotypes of women with very opposing qualities while still displaying characters with feminism. This poem combines mercy and humility with a physical attraction which indicates the placement of power in the women characters.…

Though Lanyer lived when the world frowned upon women writers, she managed to be "one of the few published woman poets of the Renaissance" (p 1059). This fact of such a great accomplishment for a woman in the world did not, however, changes the forms in which it was acceptable for a woman to write. Therefore, because Lanyer was limited to write in the form of a journal, letter or devotation, her cry for sexual equality needed to be disguised in one of these forms. Thus, as a devotation to God, Aemilia Lanyer pushed her work to new heights within a feminist point of view. To accomplish this push, while staying within the accepted forms of women's writing, Lanyer discusses a few important biblical events.…

ENGLISH ESSAY -THE POEMS IN THE WORLDS WIFE REFLECT DUFFY’S OWN, VERY FEMINIST, VIEWOF THE WORLD- This paper presents Carol Ann Duffy as one of the biggest talents in British poetry, whose poems in the Worlds Wife reflect her very feminist point of view; this aspect helped her to become the first woman appointed poet laureate in Great Britain in 2009. First and foremost, the author´s use of images and literary devices to show man and woman relationships in which she is treated like an object of possession and at the same time she is the one who enjoys being a terrible creature and taking revenge of men attitudes and actions. Thus, evidences taken after a close analysis of three poems: Little Red Cap, Pygmalion´s bride and Medusa, first reveal how the woman is living under the men authority and desire; second show how woman claims superiority to be main character in the adapted versions of fairytales, fables and myths presented by this poet; third provide events to illustrate the way men has been leading the society in many aspects making her feel weak and inferior and fourth indicates the…
