Advice To Graduates By George Saunders Speech

“We come to love other people and are thereby counter-instructed in our own centrality. We get our butts kicked by real life, and people come to our defense, and help us, and we learn that we’re not separate, and don’t want to be. We see people near and dear to us dropping away, and are gradually convinced that maybe we too will drop away.” George Saunders says this line in his “Advice to Graduates” speech he told at the Syracuse Graduation in 2013. This line really stuck out to me, and so did this speech as a whole. I was touched by George Saunders speech because not long ago, I to realized that being kind to others is the most important thing. George regrets not being nicer to others and not sticking up for others more. I realize now that so do I. I think back at hurtful things I might have said to my parents, a friend, or an ex boyfriend. When I was younger I was very selfish and only cared for my needs and myself. As I grew up and matured, I realized that life does not revolve around Allyson Kristina Moore and the world is a bigger place than New Jersey. I started to care more for others such as my parents, siblings and friends. I took into consideration his or her needs and wants over my own because some times it is more important to help someone else who is not yourself. You can always go back and help yourself, but your loved ones and others will not always be around so it is important to help them and be kind to them as well. Kindness plays a huge role in my life. It is important that I always remember to be kind to others, especially my boyfriend. He is manic-depressive and deals with very bad anxiety. I always try my hardest to put him firsts because I know that he needs my help more than I do.
