Advertising Does Not Stand Alone Analysis

Upon skimming the later essays of, “Signs of Life in the USA” by Jack Solomon and Sonia Maasik, I felt especially perplexed by what I read on pages 248-249 on the first paragraph of the essay, “Advertising Does Not Stand Alone” by Julia B. Corbett. After deep consideration, I ultimately determined that this portion of the essay begins by explaining how nothing in society can have power without working for the benefit of other institutions as well as its own. The writing goes on to explain that advertising doesn’t exist on its own, but instead is tied to a wide range of other institutions. This paragraph then concludes with the idea that advertising will forever remain powerful and influential because of its incredibly widespread existence. In terms of the entire essay, I feel that this opening paragraph works to establish a lot of background for what the …show more content…
Upon reading this, I had the realization that advertisements aren’t there to bore you, rather they exist for the purpose of putting forth a product and furthering our capitalist economy in that way. There are many people who make their livings from advertisement revenue alone, and I think it’s important to consider more than just the fact that advertisements aren’t the definition of entertainment. Regardless of the public eye, however, advertisements are very successful, and the aforementioned excerpt makes this tremendously clear with statements like, “The very ubiquitousness of advertising – extending beyond regular media buys to include placing products in movies, sponsoring sporting events, and the full-length infomercial – ensures its power and influence in numerous places and institutions” (Corbett 249).
