The cult Lasn describes in her essay is like an advertising cult, you see it all around you and you want what is advertised to be the next best and biggest thing. You become a part of the cult because you follow the advertisements and buy and want what is being advertised. Anyone can be a member of the cult if they chose to be, and truly it is hard not to be. Even if you don’t feel like you are a member of the cult chances are you probably are “the atmosphere is quite un-Moonielike. We’re free to roam and recreate” (pg.51) and that's why we don’t always feel like we are actually a part of the cult. When it comes to rules they “don’t seem oppressive. But make no mistake: There are rules” (pg.51) Cult members always want what they can’t have and “have been recruited into roles and behavior patterns we did not consciously choose” (pg.51). …show more content…
We can join the cult just about when we learn to talk and tell our parents what we want. The beliefs of the cult is that we will be happy once we get what we want but clearly that's not always the case, we urge for more, one after the other and are never satisfied. I don’t think we could ever really get out of the cult, you’ll always have a part of the cult with you even if you start living off the land and not needing many items you’ll still reach for the best deer to kill. After reading this article I realized our current culture really is a cult and I am definitely apart of it. I always seem to want the next best thing and even though I will be happy with my purchase for about a day or so, the happiness I get from the item fades
