Since the establishment of the practice, advertising has been praised and criticized alike. According to Arens, Schaefer, and Weigold (2015), “Advertising is the structured and composed nonpersonal communication of information, usually paid for and usually persuasive in nature, about products (goods, services, and ideas) by identified sponsors through various media” (p. 7). Critics of advertising say that advertising is pervasive, misleading, and that it subconsciously takes advantage of the greater public. Advocates of the practice of advertising point out that advertising benefits the public greatly, most of our entertainment is paid for through advertising as well as the news that keeps us informed and civically engaged. There are laws in place to prevent deceptive and misleading advertisements, but there is no workable model to move entertainment and the news away from the advertising model. Advertising is necessary in monetizing entertainment and informational services in the United States. Advertising has other benefits to society other than just funding the media; it can also push for social change. Public service announcements are a form of advertising and are often responsible for bringing awareness to important causes and organizations. Finally, advertising propagates competition in the marketplace, which ultimately benefits consumers since competition generally leads to lower prices.
