Advertising: An Analysis Of The Al Ain Municipality Campaign Adverts

Advertisements such as foods, colognes, accessories, clothes, and other merchandises strive to attract or persuade people to become interested or buy their products. However, tobacco products such as cigar, chewing tobacco, and the most popular one, cigarette, have no ads similar to the other products: they do not promote. It is well known that tobacco products are dangerous to our health, thus promoting this is similar to asking someone to destroy himself or herself. Probably the most familiar illness that it can cause is cancer, lung cancer to be precise. Just hearing the word “cancer” is horrifying. However, with all these issues about the substance, somehow, it is still well liked by many people. All the information that we see in magazines, newspapers, billboards, etc., concerning tobacco are all negatives, but it is still a product for the masses. For this, the ads in anti-smoking needs to be more impactful than ever before, and the Al Ain Municipality campaign advertisement knows it. To persuade people from stop smoking, or even just filter this habit, the Al Ain Municipality advertisement poster used some elements in the poster to convey its message.

The cigarette is positioned at a ninety-degree angle while emitting smoke on the top. It resembles a factory chimney that always releases a ton of smoke every day. The poster wants to tell us that smoking is a factory that does not just produce minute gases. If we smoke every day, considering our large population, we might be producing gas similar to those larger factories, such as a nuclear power plant or an oil refinery. In addition, it also conveys that not only we are affecting human beings, but also the environment.
