Two characters that submit to adversity are Lucien Wilbanks in “A Time To Kill” and Arthur ‘Boo’ Radley in “To Kill A Mocking Bird”. Jake’s adverse situation is that Carl-Lee Hailey is going to be put in jail for shooting the men who raped his daughter, and Jake feels that this is morally wrong. He says that when he heard about the situation, “All he could think about were all the monsters out there,”2 and he used the law to defend Carl-Lee for removing two of these “monsters” from the world. In response to this situation, he uses the law to free Carl-Lee that he is falsely accused of raping a white woman. He could have left town or becoming violent toward those accusing him of the crime, but his response was to leave the situation to the legal system provided by society.
