Adventure Based Counseling

Improved Essays
I have really enjoyed Adventure Based Counseling so far. We have done a lot of fun activities that I don’t think I would have participated in if I were in a different setting. We have done some activities that I have done in the past and some that are completely new to me. This class has also taught me a lot of useful skills about working with groups of people. During the class we did the activity called Herbert Saturday. That activity was really hard for me and I didn’t get the end result we were looking for, which should have been you concentrated. I believe that part of the reason I didn’t get the right answer was because with you walking around and reading through the different steps quickly it made all of us feel pressured to hurry

One of the most exciting things that have happened in this new semester of school is having the opportunity of attending a service learning class. Personally, I believe that it is important to engage not only in educational programs, but also in service learning courses that will help us grow as service agents and leaders in our communities. Having the opportunity of working hand in hand with the House of Loreto is not only an enrichment opportunity, but also since I am studying Occupational Therapy it helps me to have a deeper understanding of the elderly population which I plan on working with in the future. Working closely with the resident Eileen Miller helped me to have a deeper understanding of the course readings and how the elders…

Over the last decade, wilderness therapy has improved its clinical sophistication and treatment modality. What once was referred to by critics as “hell camps” (Smith 1996) and connotated with numerous incidents where youth were either injured or died as a result of boot camp endeavors has since developed into a healthcare program backed with a growth of balance in the wild: challenges and nurturing, structure and safety, and humility in learning what’s inside and outside of one’s control. In selecting a topic to educatedly ramble on for a decent degree of pages, I dedicated countless hours and multiple migraines to selecting an issue that not only I could learn more about, but that our community (whether immediate or all around) could pick…

While I was at my tour at the William George Agency, I have learned three new things that were related to juveniles. The first thing that I learned on the tour was that the juveniles there on the campus are allowed to participate in athletic sport competitions against other high schools around them, even one of the schools they compete against is a school that’s in my home town. The Impact of the lesson for me was that, knowing the kids from William George school were allowed to play in competitive games against other schools, it gave them a chance to have fun and explore in something new that could possibly grow on them as a new interest that could then pursue them on setting future goals, because I am a firm believer of sports being a gateway…

The Capstone Experience was extremely rewarding, as I now have a better understanding of the helping profession and how it all ties together. There is the fund raising component, staff meetings, public speaking events, and single mothers to attend to. The helping profession is a career choice that requires a great deal of love for humanity and patience. The course gave me the opportunity to experience how it would be like to work in my career choice. It allowed me to put to practice the skills I have learned throughout the HSA Program.…

Since starting high school, my interest in classroom learning had dropped quite significantly. I felt like grades were just a game, and that I should be out in the world learning things I deemed "practical life skills." My senior year I was able to mentor in a classroom of fourth graders for one period, ever other day. I took the class thinking it would be an easy and fun way to spend an hour an a half.…

Throughout my entire school career, I have been frustrated at my math classes, but it wasn’t that they were going too fast; it was that they were going too slow. Every opportunity to move ahead I was given, I used. When I was given the chance to move up from Algebra II to pre-calculus, I studied for hours every day up until the day of the test came. “Beep! Recently, I had a learning experience from my internship that will help me even more in my pursuit in the field of social work. The day that this event occurred it helped me be able to be the teacher rather than the student to my intern advisors. Being that Voyage house is a support program for clients, we help to provide them with the necessities of food and household items from those that have no income. Therefore, we take them to Walmart and give them a budget that they are able to work with since they only need to provide resources just for them to living off. This was on a Friday where I had to miss group because I had something to do at school that morning; therefore, I just met my intern advisor later that day at Walmart.…
