The Criminal Justice system is made up of multiple sections to ensure citizens safety around the world. Every town, city, county, state, and country has some sort of system to prevent all different types of crime. The Uniform Crime Reporting or UCR, measures crime by the FBI. The National Crime Victimization Survey or NCVS, measures crime through victims reporting an incident. Together, the UCR and NCVS help report the crimes committed in certain areas. Crime measuring helps law enforcement, courts, and corrections detect what crimes are committed and where the crimes are committed. Each of the different types of measuring have advantages and disadvantages to thr Criminal Justice system. The UCR measures crime by the FBI. The FBI compiles …show more content…
The NCVS gives victims a way to report crime in general. The NCVS was mainly brought about the measure difficult crimes in rape, sexual-assault, and domestic violence (Dodge and Rennison 2015). Crimes that involved rape, or any type of violence are always harder for victims to talk about and report. The survey provides people the ability to report dragic falls on their life. An advantage of the NCVS involves more protection of the victim from an armed offender especially with assualts (Dodge and Rennison 2015). Another reason why the NCVS provides an advantage was by the amount of crime rate numbers that went up by reporting the crimes in this particular way. There are many people who do not report crimes, but the NCVS helped people come forward and report in the NCVS fashion. Even though the NCVS has advantages, there are disadvantages as well. For example, "Today, the NCVS is the nation 's primary source of information about the frequency, characteristics, and consequences of violent victimization against persons age 12 and older (Dodge and Rennison)". The NCVS only allows reports of people who are twelve years of age or older. The NCVS should allow every age to be reported no matter what. Another disadvantage with the NCVS can be the sampling and nonsampling error. Since the NCIS requires a survey, the survey can experience a inevitable error. Unfortunately, there cannot be a one hundred percent way to calculate all crime around the world. The most effective way to calculate crime rate must be by the

In 1985, a joint task force of the Bureau of Justice Statistics and the FBI was created to study and recommend ways to improve the quality of information contained in the UCR (UCR Study Task Force, 1985). This resulted in the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) and the first collection of data began in 1991. Under NIBRS, participating law enforcement authorities provide offense and arrest data on 22 broad categories of crime covering 46 offenses while providing only arrest information on 11 other offenses (Bohm and Haley, 2012). The advantages of the NIBRS as compared to the UCR is that the NIBRS provides more data on each crime, making it possible to examine crimes in much more detail.…

Several factors play into the comparison of the UCR and NIBRS. You must consider the factual differences, non-uniform reporting practices, and reporting errors (Rantala, Ramona, R., 2000, p 9). The factual differences between the two data sources include the expansion of the hotel rule and modified or restructured crime definitions in NIBRS, and the use of the hierarchy rule in the UCR (Rantala, Ramona, R., 2000, p 9). By the design it seems as if NIBRS have an upper hand on UCR by measuring the different aspects of crime, giving the statistics on each type of crime within every incident, and less reporting errors (Rantala, Ramona, R., 2000, p 9). The FBI published a series of topical studies (“Juvenile Female Crime: A Special Study” appeared…

The Uniform Crime Report was created and is used to provide credible criminal justice statistics for operations of the criminal justice system as well as for the management of the criminal justice administration. (Uniform Crime, 2014) The Uniform Crime Report and the National Crime Victimization Survey measure overlapping, yet not quite identical, crimes. The National Crime Victimization Survey helps provide unavailable information regarding crimes, victims, and offenders. This includes crimes that go unreported to the police for various reasons. An additional difference is that The National Crime Victimization Survey does not include arson, commercial crime, crimes against kids under the age of 12, and homicide, whereas the Uniform Crime Report does include those categories of crime.…

Some of the factors UCR uses to collect data are geographic locations, age, ethnic group (race), sex, status, etc. “The geographical, temporal, and offense coverage of the UCR program is the most comprehensive of any crime data set. Through the UCR, the citizens and the law enforcement officers can see the crime rates or statistics in a given city. The UCR identifies offenses in two categories, Part I – the index crime and Part 2 – the less serious crime. The index crime is the violent crimes, property crimes, and human trafficking. Violent crimes include homicide, assault, forcible, rape, and robbery.…

In creating these programs, the NIJ uses a comprehensive process to make valid technology programs for the criminal justice system. This process uses the research, development, testing, and evaluation approach to “ensure that the NIJ’s research portfolios are aligned to the best technology needs of the criminal justice community,” (Justice, 2009). For example, the NIJ formed a working group to study some of the disadvantages of the praised specialized database, the AFIS. The Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) is a specialized database that is designed to match known and unknown fingerprints with intentions on connecting a suspect to a pending crime or to an unsolved crime. The Integrated AFIS has a hierarchical structure that is perpetuated throughout the United States.…
