Gap Year In High School

Improved Essays
A frequent question asked by many high school seniors is, “Should I go to college after I graduate, or do I take a gap year?” Some kids lean towards going to college while some lean towards going into the real world. Of course people can go straight to college and get a degree and graduate before they are 23 or so. But, most kids these days are taking the year off of school to get out into the real world and stretch their wings. Some reasons for taking a gap year is; to get a job and save money, get real life experience, see what it is like to live alone or with someone, try new things, and finally to find out what a person wants to do with their life. But in the end taking a gap year is a good thing and can help in many different ways. …show more content…
This is important because trying new things is how people live life to its full potential. If someone just did the same stuff over and over again they would not really be living. It also helps to try new things so that a person can broaden their view of hobbies or work places or anything. With trying new things, a person would be able to find out what they want to do with life. This is an important decision, what they want do for a living, because like the saying goes, “if you work a job you like you never work a day in your life.”
Now since there are two sides to this question, take a gap year or not, there are going to be some refutations. One of the biggest refutations is that people say,” don’t take a gap year so you can graduate quicker and start real life, and start making money.” But if someone takes the gap year they already have real world experience with them when they go into college. Also is a person takes the gap year and gets a real job and they save it they will have made some money before college and that could help them to getting a place to live after they graduate

This is because on the gap year a person will be forced into a new society, new friends, and maybe a new group of people. In college a person will need this kind of skill, and a person who took a gap year will be ready. Another small reason is that during that gap year a person will find out what is important in life. This is important because in college it is easy for someone to get so caught up in college and fraternities or a friend group, that some small crisis might seem like the end of the world. But if a person takes a gap year that person will see before college that there are bigger problems then hanging out with that certain friend group or failing a test. Last small reason is that a person will have a shinier resume and application. Usually a gap year involves staying somewhere and taking in some culture, which mean probably getting a job. No matter where you work either in a farmers market in India, or an embassy in London, a person will have valuable, international, experience for their resume or application and will show that you can do business will people from other

Also, College will help students build knowledge, build self-confidence, improve communication skills, gain independence, explore more options, and learn more about themselves. My mother is the reason why I attend college. My mother did not go to college. I would appeal to ethos to try to persuade my skeptical parents that a gap year will be beneficial by having a parent of a person who had taken a gap year speak to my parents about any concerns that they may have about me taking a year off. Also, I would arrange a meeting with my high school principal so that my parents can talk to a school official and ask any questions they may have.…

As I was finishing up high school I didn’t think I would go to college because I didn’t have a clue what I wanted to do with my life. I don’t think that I was very motivated about figuring out what I wanted to do so I push that in the back of my head. I didn’t really have the knowledge I have now about college due to the fact both my parents didn’t finish high school, which had a lot to do with my lack of motivation towards school. I think as you grow up your role model which is your parents should tell you the importance of school, but also asking your child their dreams and aspirations. Today I am in college, which I feel is a very wise choice I made for higher education. I know what I want to do in life and this career requires me to have college degree. According to David Leonhardt in his article, “Even for Cashiers, College Pays off” having a college level education will benefit you more than stopping your education at high school. Going to college can teach you a lot more that high school will, which can provide you with a high-skilled work…

There are many programs that one can participate in; from unpaid and paid work, volunteering in orphanages and small towns, to leisure and travel (O’Shea 2). Many students have different reasons on why they participate in the gap year program, from wanting a break from academics, wanting to travel, being part of a community, to wanting to get away from everything and starting fresh. This time gives the students to see the world and do the things that being in school prevented them on doing. But choosing to take a gap year not only gives the students a break from academics but also gives them a time to mature and be independent before attending a higher education and entering the job…

    Gap Year Research Paper

My view that Americans should embrace the gap year is no different. Although the vast majority of research papers I have come across when writing this paper have been in favor of the gap year, I did find one research paper that suggested that taking the time off does have a negative impact on degree completion. Dr. Phillip Parker, an award winning educational psychologist from the Australian Catholic University in Sydney concluded that “there is little evidence that individuals who took a gap-year would, on average, have had significantly different outcomes had they attempted to enter university directly after high school” (Parker). The issue with Parker’s paper is that its limitations completely discredit its findings. For example the “Finnish study found no difference in growth in goal commitment, effort, expectations of attainment and strain, or in actual university enrollment in those planning to enter university directly versus those who plan to take a gap-year.” And the “Australian study found no difference in growth in outlooks for the future and career prospects, and life satisfaction between gap-year youth and direct university entrants” (Parker). Parker is saying that his study didn’t actually find any difference between those who took a gap year and those who did take a gap year. That is completely different from claiming that taking a gap year had a negative impact on those students’ academic careers. Parker…

Gap years teach responsibility, independence and confidence. For many high school graduates, they have never had to rely on themselves and have always had parents hovering over them telling them what to do and helping them every time they had a problem. Going strait from having parents handle most of your problems and making sure you get to class on time, to being at college with no parents to help you can be hard to handle and stressful. A gap year, allows students to get away from parents, and school and become more mature. In one article author Christiana…

Having a gap year allows students to also do other activities without being worried about taking a test or completing a book report the next day. Taking a year off is also a perfect opportunity to explore the world and meet new friends, especially if it involves with a career that the student is interested in. Internships will be provided for a wide variety of career positions and becoming an intern would help understand what really goes on when performing the job. For people who disagree, a person would mention that some students might abuse that year of opportunity and use the gap year as a vacation. This statement can also be true; in conclusion most students who are determined to become successful will focus on using the year…
