Structural Functionalism There are many advantages to the structural functionalism in our US educational system. The primary goal is to provide an academic education to the citizens of society. However, so much more is gained from an organized academic educational environment. At an early age young students experience and interactively learn socialization. The academic educational classroom environment is the base for a stable pattern for social behavior. During the closeness in the classroom a sense of solidarity is soon achieved. The advantages would be what is learned from the negative inequalities, and the repair of the inequalities. New laws, policies, regulations, addendums, education, procedures, and support systems balance out the inequality. Some may see it as an advantage when the wealthy for example can buy or donate their way into school. After all, the school receives their much needed money, and the student achieves the goal of entering school. However, at what cost? An academic department head or teacher can look at a student’s appearance and demeanor and instantly make assumptions. Fair or not we are conditioned to respond the classes differently based on what we interpret them to be. An advantage could be that similar classes can spot one from their own class with just a glance. It is the first day of school and well-dressed teacher spots a well-dressed student in her class. The teacher speaks to the student and he is obviously from money and very socially adept. Therefore, the teacher assumes he will be a good student. On the other hand the teacher notices another student that looks all worse for wear, greasy messy hair, lacking eye contact, and speaks under her breath with an unsure aura. The teacher then assumes this student could be a waste of her time, and already feels like she will put less effort into teaching
