The advances that have been made in technology over the past 10 years has created significant changes in the way students, and adults, live their life. Ten years ago simpler versions of the smartphone were available, but were used primarily by adults for business reasons with the ability to fax documents and had a calendar. In 2007, Apple released the iPhone and later that same year Microsoft offered the android operating system, and all of that changed. The advanced functions, the capabilities for fun and useful applications, music capabilities, and the ability to have basically a mini-computer in your pocket appealed to young people and adults both. Today, nearly every teenager has their own cell phone right in their pocket. However, like most things, there are positive and negatives to having access to their phones at all times.
The ability for students to have access to cell phones in class can be a great source of academic help. These students would be at a great disadvantage if cell phones were allowed to be used in today’s classrooms. They would have to use the resources available to them through the school, and depending on what school they go to, this might make them have to wait several days to use a computer for research. Other students that can afford smartphones could use the multiple apps that are available on their phones for classroom projects which may lead to better grades than the students who do not have access to these apps, which are often available free with smartphone use. This would be an example of where a family’s income would provide a student with an advantage in the classroom, which would not be fair to the student who does not have the same
