Overview
A number of people die over stray bullets every day. All this is because the guns are handled by the unauthorized individuals. In addition to stray bullets, most people are killed by terrorists who acquire guns illegally. Gun technology that selects the individual to fire the gun was introduced in 1990s but unfortunately it was not adopted. This is due to rejection by NRA with the aim of selling both the guns with new technology and those without. The following are the new technologies in smart gun to meet safety;
1. Wrist watch technology
This is where a wrist watch is directly connected to the functioning of the gun. There is internal tracking device in both the gun and the wristwatch that …show more content…
Finger print technology Most systems ranging from the bank accounts to voting system use the fingerprint technology for security purposes. Currently most offices use fingerprints to open the doors to hence, ensuring no unauthorized person enters without being seen by any of the staff members. It is this technology that has advanced to a level of being used to control firearms. Biomac Austrian Company is currently in the process of introducing the use of fingerprint to unlock your gun. A sensor is installed on the handle of the gun that will be able to recognize the real owner of the gun using the finger prints. If the sensor identifies that the gun is not with the owner there will be no possible trigger. One advantage of this technology is that the gun can be designed to accept installation of more than one finger prints allowing sharing.
Challenges of the technology
The technology is very good news to anyone who needs safety with the use of the firearms. Unfortunately, there are some people who are not ready for the technology for their own selfish reasons. The following are the challenges that the technology is facing;
i. Threats to the …show more content…
They insist on distributing the already manufactured guns with no technology so that they cannot run at a loss. They also fear being victims of distribution where they have to struggle reaching their customers. It is therefore very hard to convince them that technology has benefits. Since, it is a profit oriented company, the fear serious risks like this. iii. Risk of hacking
With a large strong population against the technology, it faces a risk of destruction by enemies. Hacking is one of the threats that most computer systems face and so is the firearm technology. There is always a way of doing and undoing something. Unfortunately, undoing is a major weapon that an enemy uses to prevent progress. Hacking is one of the major ways of undoing the security mechanisms installed on them.
Remedies for the challenge
Whenever there is a challenge there must be a way of controlling the impact if not overcoming it. One of the ways is rewarding those who use the guns and the distributers. This will encourage more buying and distribution. Protecting the distributers from harm from the opposition distributers is also another way of promoting implementation of the
