Optimal Sustainability for Transportation
Global Warming is spiraling out of control causing increasing atmospheric temperature which contributes to negative climate changes. Due to transportation emitting twenty-three percent of greenhouse gas emissions, it is only fair to say that countries all over the world should enforce proper regulations and requirements to slow down these emissions. Renewable energies has created many solutions for reduce greenhouse gases. Once these alternatives are implemented more effectively the dilemma of global warming will become less of an issue. Integrating low burning fuels, frequent car maintenance, and shifting to minimal public transit services can have exceptional results towards reducing greenhouse gases.

Between 1990-2012, GHG emissions in the transportation sector increased the most out of any other sector (i.e. electricity generation, industry, agriculture, residential, or commercial). Due to inadequate operating systems in vehicles, eco-friendly amenities were not added until after the Millennium. Amenities such as storing energy from braking and using it later, lessening the weight for the materials used to build vehicles, and increasing aerodynamic vehicles with better shape design. The EPA has developed a SmartWay Program to encourage reduction of emissions. Cars without up to date operating systems could use this programs like, driving sensibly. Driving sensibly reduces emissions by avoiding quick acceleration and abrupt braking. Engine idling produces 130,000 tons of carbon dioxide. Abstaining from idling for ten minutes can save the environment from one pound of carbon dioxide. Drivers lack to maintain car checks by 40% with an additional 10% skipping car maintenance altogether. Frequent oil changes, maintaining mechanical changes, and driving with fully inflated tires can positively impact greenhouse emissions. By changing car habits and maintaining the engine it could reduce smog in each state, reduce asthma, and lung

The problem with gasoline powered vehicles is that high amounts of CO2 are released into the atmosphere, causing “Desertification, Increased melting of snow and ice, Sea level rise, Stronger storms and extreme events”(whatsyourimpact.org) But with electric powered vehicles we can reduce the levels of CO2 in the air if we look at “The report, “Driving Cleaner: More Electric Vehicles Mean Less Pollution,” shows that electric vehicles could prevent more than 18 million metric tons of climate-changing carbon pollution annually in the U.S. by 2025.” (Madsen). At that rate,…

The pollution created by most petroleum vehicles is a big cause of global warming. As pointed out by: Siena Kaplan, Brad Heavner, and Rob Sargent, "Plug-in cars ... produce less global warming pollution, emit little or no pollution from the tailpipe, and reduce our dependence on oil” (Plug-in Electric Vehicles Will Reduce Air Pollution). One of the most important things we need to consider, is where we get our energy. Some parts of the country obtain their energy from coal; which is not a clean source of energy for pollution reduction. The energy source we need to advance in, is clean energy.…

All in all, driving cars around cause more problems than it does well. The car exhaust releases carbon dioxide, which, affect drastically to our global warming. There are alternative such and electric and hybrid cars that produce less emission, however, it takes a lot of time and energy to build hybrid and electric cars. There are problems both ways, but the use of private cars is higher. The best solution for solving this issue would be to use in less private cars.…

Pollution from vehicles is very harmful to the Earth and the people on it, and has been polluting the Earth for over a hundred years now. We need a way of transportation that’s less harmful to humans and the environment, that doesn’t produce toxic fumes, and costs less money. Battery powered cars are the solution to this problem. Battery powered cars are a safe, non polluting alternative to regular vehicles that burn fossil fuels. Replacing gasoline cars with these non polluting battery powered cars would cut down on air pollution, save money, and would save fossil fuels.…

Also, if the energy is produced in coal power plants, electric cars would reduce as much as 22% compared to gasoline powered cars. An EU study shows that it will reduce 33% or more by 2020. Due to the development of alternative energy, fossil fuel energy will decrease by the years. Another reason electric cars are better for the environment is because it could reduce number of deaths from air-pollution. As a matter of fact, the National Academies of Sciences have discovered that the death ratio can be reduced by 70%, if we use renewable energy.…

Hydropower, geothermal power, and nuclear power can greatly reduce the CO2 emissions produced in making electric cars. Only when successfully paired with greener energy factories will electric cars actually begin to make a difference in the reduction of emissions. Even so, traffic jams are inevitable. While idling, all cars will produce emissions. On one hand, these numbers seem to point towards the usage of electric cars as a positive, on the other hand, in order for electric cars to be practical, the entire transportation infrastructure would need to make some changes.…

The software activated full emissions controls during testing but reduces the effectiveness during regular driving. As a result, the cars emit nitrogen oxides at up to 40 times more than the allowable standard. The software enables cars to get better fuel economy at the cost of higher nitrogen oxide emissions (Boston et al., 2015). Volkswagen tried to sell their cars saying their cars had better performance and lower emissions but they did not mention the nitrogen emissions. Emission of up to 40 times more nitrogen by Volkswagen cars was a bad hit for the environment.…

This solution would still provide jobs in the motor industry and the environment would be suffering slightly less with people owning environmentally friendlier cars. Harry Wray suggested that “Increasing taxes on gasoline, as European nations have done, is the most direct way to reduce driving. If gas prices were raised to $5 a gallon, people would not only drive less and carpool more; they would demand energy-efficient cars.” (Wray). Since his work was published in 2008, he wouldn’t have known that soon enough America would run into that exact situation. Resources running low and gas rising to approximately $4 and staying that way from…

Thus, this significantly impacted the environment. Many customers bought the diesel fueled vehicles because they believed they were creating a sustainable environment as advertised by Volkswagen. However, the vehicles engine emitted nitrogen oxide pollutants up to 40 times above the legal standards. This pollutant is extremely dangerous and heavily linked to lung cancer. In total, affected vehicles in the U.S. are likely emitting between 10,392 to 41,571 tons of toxic nitrogen oxides into the air every year, based on the typical mileage counts.…

That is the way we power our vehicles, this has a major impact on what we call global warming. People use cars almost every day for going to work, school, and traveling and it causes so much of the pollution today with the gases they release. There is one way we can help to reduce the gases polluting our air and that is through the idea of the electric car, it uses way less non-renewable resources than any other types of cars today. The car relies almost solely on the electric battery, but still does use little bits of gas when it needs to. Cars alone produce a large percentage of the pollution released in the United States and this could definitely bring this percentage down.…
