In conclusion both of these reporting systems play a vital role in criminology. Without these reports criminologist would not be able to effectively study crime. As stated earlier “Measuring crime has always been one of the most difficult challenges facing criminal justice researchers.” (Maxfield, 1999). Both of these reporting systems have their advantages and disadvantages however they have been very useful and resourceful to criminologist although it is quite evident that NIBRS reporting has many benefits over UCR reporting due to the details it pulls from each incident.

In 1985, a joint task force of the Bureau of Justice Statistics and the FBI was created to study and recommend ways to improve the quality of information contained in the UCR (UCR Study Task Force, 1985). This resulted in the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) and the first collection of data began in 1991. Under NIBRS, participating law enforcement authorities provide offense and arrest data on 22 broad categories of crime covering 46 offenses while providing only arrest information on 11 other offenses (Bohm and Haley, 2012). The advantages of the NIBRS as compared to the UCR is that the NIBRS provides more data on each crime, making it possible to examine crimes in much more detail.…

UCR is not gone for good though; it just received a significant upgrade. The NIBRS system is incident driven, not summary driven like the UCR, and records each offense occurring in an incident. New methodology incorporates better details about incidences statistically giving it a more accurate approach to data consolidation. The traditional 21 offenses have been replaced with 49 other offenses for accurate organization. Information is reported on rate of crime and is computed on the number of crimes per some unit of population.…

First, the NCVS and the UCR serve different purposes. The UCR’s primary function is to provide criminal justice statistics to enhance law enforcement administration, operation and management. On the other hand, the NCVS provides unavailable information dealing with crime, to include crimes not reported to police, victims, and offenders. Second, NCVS and UCR measures of crimes are overlapping, however not identical. Stated earlier, the NCVS omits certain crimes, and the UCR summarizes crime reported to law enforcement agencies but only collects arrest information for simple assaults and sexual assaults other than forcible rape.…
