Register to read the introduction… According to Richards, Platt and Weber (1985) explicity refer to “An activity or action which is carried out as the result of processing or understanding language. i.e. as a response. For example, drawing a map while listening to a tape, and listening to an instruction and performing a command, may be referred to as task. Tasks may or may not involve the production of language. A task usually requires the teacher to specify what will be regarded as succesful completion of the task.”
In a classroom environment, a task is “An activity which requires learners to use language, with emphasis on meaning, to attain an objective.” (Bygate, Skehan and Swain, 2001).

Task – based learning finds his main exponent in N. Pabhu who figured out that it is was easier for students to concentrate on solutions for non-linguistic problems, rather than answering linguistic questions.

Interestingly, he developed his procedural syllabus based on a set of tasks according to difficulty in schools of India. His tasks were problem – oriented and designed to be intellectually challenging so as to promote his students’ imagination and keep interest among them.
 According to Prabhu (1987), a second language acquisition takes place while the learners make an effort to communicate. Long and Crookes (1992) added the idea of the consciousness of this process that the learner has while they are engaged in the meaning of the conversations. This is called ”focus on form”.
 Later, further studies made by Doughty (2001) examined the psycholinguistic mechanisms for this aim. She stated that the speech processing provides the opportunity of drawing attention to form while learners are planning their utterances. Moreover, these “cognitive intrusions” are the ones which facilitate a natural language processing which leads to the adquisition of the language.
