My son Miles Magruder has proven that he has the intellectual ability to successfully complete the advanced course work at Samuel Ogle Middle School by maintaining a 3.0+ grade point average. As the year has progressed his skill set, staying focused, completing assignments and even turning in assignments has interfered with his overall performance. This inability to perform has also weakened his self confidence and love for learning. I believe AVID program will encourage, motivate and bring back his excitement for…

Throughout high school, I have been involved in many activities. I started off with the STEM academy in my high school. In the STEM academy, we held special events that teach people, especially kids, about new experiments and science-related careers. I helped out the STEM academy by explaining people about the experiments, the purpose behind the experiments and cleaned or organized lab equipment. I was a part of the STEM academy for approximately three years in high school and I really enjoyed it because I knew I could make a difference in my community.…

Ever since I came to Xaverian in 2013, I have looked forward to being able participate in Christian Senior Service. The fact that Xaverian gives students the opportunity to give back to their community last quarter of their Senior year (and high school career) is extremely invaluable. I have always enjoyed doing service. It is something that I know helps the people I am serving, but also makes me feel good inside. Helping those around me is a desire that comes natural to me.…

The North Dakota Association of Honor Society has four criteria that all members should possess and applicants must meet all four to be inducted: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. Since I have been given the opportunity to fill out the application for the Honor Society and write this essay, I clearly have demonstrated skill in the Scholarship area. However, that still leaves three other areas. First is the area of Leadership. I have been entrusted by my peers to serve in various leadership positions both in the school and through other activities that I am involved with, which range from Class President to serving as a member of the school's Peer Leader Team.…

AVID is a four commitment that I’m ready to enter in order to prepare me for college. I want to continue what I started in seventh grade and enroll in AVID at EDHS so I can possibly learn more than I already know for taking one semester before transferring to EDHS. I know I stopped going to AVID after only attending one semester, but I’m ready to start taking AVID more seriously now than I was before. If I want something, I’ll go after it, so that’s why I want to enroll into AVID again. I’ll do anything to get into this if it means that I’ll get the required skills that will help me once I get into a college.…

How community service has affected me Community service has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. Volunteering and being asked to perform in musicals and plays at our local theatres has been a fantastic experience for me that I hope I’ll be able to continue my whole life in every city that I land throughout my journey. Through acting and dancing we inspire children and adults alike to live their dream and even soften a few hearts if we can. I’ve watched lives change in just a matter of minutes; even if it’s just one child shouting “Mommy I want to be a performer one day!” at the top of their lungs after watching a performance.…

What have you done to make your school or your community a better place? 370 “With the world so set on tearing itself apart, it don 't seem like such a bad thing to me to want to put a little bit of it back together.” This quote from the recent film Hacksaw Ridge embodies my sentiment that brightening up someone’s day is the best feeling in the world for me. This desire to help others prompted me to volunteer for two years at UCLA hospital to help transport patients. Hospital patients often deal with severe pain and sometimes loneliness, and I knew that giving some of my time could improve their moods and outlooks.…
