What is vanadium
(Energizer Resources Inc., 2013) According to Energizer Resources Inc., Vanadium is a ductile material with many different uses. One of its uses is to strengthen steel due to its good structural strength. This is called ferrovanadium, when vanadium is mixed with iron. Vanadium strengthened steels has an important use in automotive, aviation, and aerospace. Another use is as a supercharger in battery technology. Vanadium has properties in it that allow it to be added to automotive batteries to store more energy, have a faster recharge rate, and provide the motor with more power or torque. (ATI Metals, 2014) Vanadium is dispersed throughout the earth’s crust and occurs in many different types of deposits. It’s known

This additive only takes a small amount to increase the tensile strength of the steel and this steel is referred to as ferrovanadium. This metal is used is automotive, aviation, and aerospace. Vanadium-titanium alloys have a high strength to weight ratio that is considered the best of any engineered material. In fact, a titanium-aluminum-vanadium alloy was used in the SR-71B aircraft engines. This allows them to reach 85,000 feet and high speeds over 2,200 mph. Vanadium has been used to strengthen the steel on hulls of battleships for so long because of its lighter weight. Vanadium has also been used to create stronger rebar to attempt to reduce damage in concrete structures in earthquake areas. (Sutulov & Wang) The titanium alloy that vanadium strengthens is used on under carriages and wings of air craft as well. (ATI Metals, 2014) It doesn’t take a large amount of vanadium to strengthen steel. Around 0.01% and 0.10% vanadium increases the toughness and lowers the ductile to brittle temperature of steel. Another interesting application that vanadium is used in is the Alaskan pipeline. In these pipes, there is a demand for high strength to weight ratio steel used in the pipe. (Knight, 2014) There have been traces of vanadium linked as far back as 3rd century B.C. This was used in swords that were as …show more content…
I learned vanadium has a wide range of uses. Like I talked about earlier in this paper, vanadium is used in steel, batteries, and other metals. These products have a wide variety of applications in anywhere from aircraft to ships to reinforcement rebar in concrete. I learned the properties of vanadium; those are corrosion resistant, heat resistant to a degree, very dense, and high tensile strength. Also vanadium is a ductile material that can be forged at low temperatures. I learned that vanadium is difficult to remove from steel which would be important if softer steel was desired in an application. I also like how vanadium can be used in wire due to its superconductivity

Parana Pine: For the Parana Pine I obtained the published value from a website since the values on the lab sheet didn’t have a values for Parana Pine. Firstly, I calculated my own Young’s Modulus Value with the result got from the tests using the equation for Young’s Modulus in Bending: E= l³/(4bd^3 ) x ( Δw)/( Δx) From using this equation, I achieved 14.44 E/GPa as a value, the published value, was: 11.37 E/GPa found on ‘The Wood Database’. The difference between my results and the Published values is: 3.07, and it was still within the range of the published value. Regarding the accuracy of the test, since this was my first time conducting this type of test, there may have been some mistakes I made that could have affected the results…

The discovery of different types of metals such as copper helped in making stronger tools that were able to last for a longer period of time. During the latter part of the Stone Age, people found that by adding certain metals to copper it would create an even sturdier metal known as bronze. “They discovered that if you add just a little of another very rare metal, it makes the copper stronger. That metal is tin... ”(Gombrich, 9).…

Assignment 1 – ARCH 3053, Gabe Lever-Brine “How did the development of new technologies and materials affect 19thC modernism?” In the 19th century, architecture arrived at a pivotal junction bringing together revivals from Greek and Gothic styles and modernising them with the latest technologies and materials that were becoming mainstream during that time. That and the careful application of Classical standards following the 18th century Industrial Revolution set the foundations to the iconic era of 19th century Modernism. With materials such as glass and cast iron emerging through the middle years of the century and steel becoming widely produced in the later years paved the way for prominent architects like Joseph Paxton and Gustave Eiffel…
