In an article, "Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder And Lifestyle-Related Behaviors In Children," a researcher stated life-style related behaviors, such as screen time, can lead to attention problems or hyperactivity (Tong et al.). This is because children are so focused on technology that they are not able to pay attention to anything other than the device. Thereby, a reduction in attention leads to a decline in social and communication skills. As children become stuck to their phones, they are missing out on the ways of enhancing child development. In an article, a mental health specialist mentions, “The more a child [uses an electronic device], the more socially awkward he or she becomes, creating a self-perpetuating cycle” (Dunckley). In the presence of electronic devices, children are not performing any physical activity. I have actually seen this with my own eyes and it saddens me how it means ti them. Furthermore, since children are too preoccupied with their devices, they sit for long periods of time without even noticing, leading to health problems. In her article, “Children and Adolescents and Digital Media,” Yolanda Chassiakos claims, “High levels of media use are linked to obesity and cardiovascular risk throughout the life course, but these associations are observed starting in early childhood” (7). This acknowledges how excessive use of technology leads to further health problems. Nevertheless, since the use of technology has begun at such an early age, obesity as well as cardiovascular diseases are witnessed in young children.
