In the novel there are mostly disadvantages from being watched. Technology is an invasion of people's privacy in both the novel and real life. One of the biggest reasons technology is used is to watch people, they watch people to keep them safe. But, watching people's every single move is not the way to keep the society safe."He glanced quickly at the wall speaker, terrified that the committee might be listening as they could at any time. But, always during the sessions together, the switch had been turned to off"(105). Jonas the main character in that situation is feared if he is being listened to by the committee from a speaker on the wall, During their switch is turned off so they are not listening.
They are listening to whatever you do with the technology they have, they want to see and hear what you are doing at all times which is basically stalking. "the giver rose from his chair, went to the speaker on the wall, and clicked the switch from off to on"(147). As the giver tells Jonas to watch something private Jonas hesitates, but the giver tells him he needs to watch this private thing. Obviously, how people that are in power in the community can spy on the rest of the society.
