The Advantages and Disadvantages of Social Media in a Job Search

Executive Summary In recent years, the amount of people with access to the internet has grown immensely. This has caused an enormous boom in people using social media. Social media sites like Facebook and Twitter can be used to connect with friends, but also make connections with professionals and other people that give you job opportunities. While Facebook and Twitter are used by a small portion of job recruiters, LinkedIn is by far the top social media site to find a job. There are some disadvantages to using social media to find a job, but the advantages greatly outweigh the bad.

Although it is not the most preferred site for recruiting, Facebook has far and away the most monthly users of any of the top social networking sites (Allton, 2014). When used correctly, Twitter is a highly effective way to find companies looking for new employees. It is a micro-blogging site, where your updates are limited to 140 characters. Users can “follow” other users, getting updates whenever a user updates their profile. This is useful when following companies you would like to work for, and have immediate knowledge of employment opportunities. The site uses hashtags (#) to link similar ideas, such as #employment. When you “tweet” about a job you are looking for, anyone that follows you will be able to see it. Even though it has the smallest amount of users, LinkedIn is the most visited social media site by recruiters. It is more business oriented than its competitors, acting as an online resume for recruiters.

Advantages of Social Media in Recruiting One of the large advantages of using social media when looking for a job is the ability to show prospective employers who you are.
