Hematopoietic neoplasms can be classified by the French American British (FAB) or World Health Organization (WHO) systems. Both of these systems have their own benefits and drawbacks therefore, this assignment shall focus more on the advantages and disadvantages of both the classification systems.
French American British Classification
Advantages:
1. This system of classification is easier to use because the cytological details are well discussed and it does not require advanced technologies such as molecular genetic tests hence, it can be used throughout most laboratories in the world (ANGELESCU, BERBEC, COLITA, BARBU, & LUPU, 2012).
2. Useful for diagnosing initial leukemia cases or when there are less methods available to aid in diagnosing if one is in a resource limited area (Bain & Estcourt, 2013)
3. Acute lymphoid and …show more content…
The outcome of WHO classification system upgrades the clinical and prognostic utility by the involvement of immunophenotyping, cytomorphology, molecular and cytogenetic tests (ANGELESCU, BERBEC, COLITA, BARBU, & LUPU, 2012).
2. The WHO classification is currently being utilized substantially more and can recognize leukemia with a good prognosis, or that will react to particular treatments, more precisely in comparison to other classification systems (Bain, 2017).
3. Chromosomal abnormalities are studied in detail under this classification such as in cases of chronic myeloid leukemia where the Philadelphia chromosome is identified allowing for treatment.
4. The investigations involved under this system are more advanced and complex hence, being time consuming resulting in a delay in making diagnosis. Complex process involved in immunophenotyping are very sensitive and can be used for the detection of minimal residual disease therefore, indicating that it has good diagnostic, therapeutical and prognostic implications (Salem & Abd El-Aziz, 2012).
