Advantages And Disadvantages Of Going To The Theater

Improved Essays
Watching movies has become a favorite past time for many people. Especially in small towns where there is not much to do on the weekends or during the week. What it all comes down to is where do you want to watch a movie at? Why not watch a movie at home? Is the theater really your best bet? Why spend time driving to a theater to pay a ton of money on your ticket and a small wimpy bag of popcorn that is too buttery only to end up having to sit behind a loud group of obnoxious people? All of this when you could be in the comfort of your own home watching Netflix with people you actually want to be around and not just that, you could also just drive to your local dollar tree and spend $1 on a box of popcorn with 5 bags in it. It all depends on …show more content…
For instance, the prices of tickets and food in the theater are insane! If you’re going as a family to the theater you are really looking to spend a fortune. According to an article written by the Daily Mail ticket prices have gone up by 26% since 2007! Ticket prices are not the only thing expensive about going to the theater though. Another thing that is expensive is the cost for your snacks! According to an article in Time magazine, 85% of the theater profit comes from the concession stand! A small box of M&Ms can cost up to $5! Another one of the main disadvantages is the distractions. In the theater, you have parents who bring their loud, crying kids. If you’re close enough to one of these kids you will eventually hear the kid ask, “What happened?” sometime during the movie. It never fails. But it’s not just the kids that make all the noise, it is the teenagers too! No doubt, when you go to the theater there will always be that one big group of friends who cannot just be quiet. And if you see neither of those two types of people you are bound to see the person that is on their phone texting throughout the whole …show more content…
There is absolutely no need for that! As long as you have a television at home you are good to go! Also, if you’re at home watching a movie you’re in control of the volume. No one likes the loud scary noises in scary movies that you can’t avoid in the theater but if you’re at home you can put the volume down and back up whenever you please! And what comes with being in control of the volume comes the control of the pause button! If you are in the theater and have to go use the restroom or get you a snack, no one is going to pause the movie just for you. At home you have the liberty to do whatever you want! If you want to snuggle up in bed with your dog to watch a movie who is going to stop you? But again the biggest difference is the money! The average cost of renting a movie is $3 and you could run to your local Dollar Tree and spend $5 on a ton of candy. But if you go to the theater you best be prepared to spend at least $15 on just snacks alone! But really, what can beat watching a movie in your pajamas, spread out on your couch under a nice warm blanket, eating whatever you already have in your fridge and with whoever you want? Absolutely nothing. Really there is to be no questions asked. Watching a movie at home definitely has its better benefits. But what really matters is that you are spending time with the person you want to be around and make the best of it whether you’re at home or out in the

    Underpricing Ticket Prices

It turns out that underpricing tickets is a very old and long-standing tradition in the entertainment industry that follows another important economic law: aligning self-interest with social interests. Nobel prize winner, Richard H. Thaler, best known for his work in defining what constitutes fairness in markets, states that following the basic principle of supply and demand- where the supplier raises prices to meet the demand- doesn’t always work. Sometimes raising prices to meet demand contradicts social interest, which, in the case of artists, can be extremely detrimental to their income. Most of an artist’s income is based on popularity. Therefore, the greater number of fans that buy their music, concert tickets, and merchandise, the more money the artist makes.…

Would you rather pay the prices for theater snacks, or not have a theater at all? If people keep smuggling in their own food from home into theaters, they would be forced to shut down due to the fact that theaters wouldn’t be able to run without the profit made from the concession stand. I believe that bringing food from outside into theaters is not okay. When you bring outside food into the theater it can be disruptive, unfair to people working there, and can sometimes be illegal.…

The presentation also differs by the fact that when a movie is produced it can have many special effects and animations. For example, on screen they can have explosions, bloody scenes, and even supernatural animations like aliens that can’t be displayed in a play. When watching a play, it is the characters that will captivate the audience even if the plot isn’t the best. However, when on screen it tends to be the opposite and it is the plot that matters the most since the characters can’t create a bond like the characters of a live performance…

College Essay Growing up in Arizona, far away from The Great White Way, my theatre-going experience had been limited to the occasional trip to a regional children’s theatre or whatever movie musical adaptation was playing in theaters. Moving to New Jersey at the start of my freshman year provided me access not only to Broadway itself, but to a completely different societal attitude regarding theatre. Neither my elementary school or middle school had a school play and trips to New York City were considered a privilege for only the wealthy. My entrance into the world of theatre appreciation also marked the entrance into the world of school pride and music appreciation/performance when I saw Motown:…
