When looking at aspects of geography and geographical study, there are a range of different texts and methods that can be used as learning tools or sources of information. These range of texts and methods can include: webpages, journals, articles, newspapers or many other types of resource. Three of the key sources of information that I will be discussing is the use of governmentally run websites, academic journals and news reporting webpages or articles. Varying uses can be found for the information found in these sources such as to educate, inform or even warn about certain hazards but mostly they are used to gather knowledge and understanding of geographical topics, despite the fact they may have questionable validity. They provide insight into global issues in a professional way that, in theory, should be un-bias. These companies both have their positives and negatives in relation to the way they present there information and the type of information that they do present. The benefits that come from using news sources are that they are very easily accessible. There is a wide selection of news reporting companies that display the news in different formats. BBC News portrays the news online and on television while the guardian mainly uses newspapers and online articles, all of which are free to access. This is a very good feature as it means that anyone from any background can view the information allowing for a wider understanding and acknowledgement of global topics. The BBC wrote many different articles revolving around the Haiti earthquake in 2010. This meant that thanks to the fact that the BBC News webpage was easily accessible, more awareness was raised about the earthquake allowing for more aid to be …show more content…
They are texts written by qualified professionals in the field so are very valuable and valid source of information and are frequently used as learning resources. Many texts and journals have been written in relation to seismic activity and the consequences that come from it. They also have many factors that make them both a very good source and a very bad source. The fact that academic journals are specially designed to talk about the specific topic means that they contain a lot of important information regarding the topic and are specially designed for it. This makes them a very valuable source but they can be deemed as invalid as they are written by credited academics, the things they write are based off of their own opinions. This means that the information they write could be wrong making it an invalid learning tool.
