In people who are depressed and who have anxiety, serotonin, a neurotransmitter that regulates mental balance, is low. Escitalopram works to keep serotonin from being absorbed back into the neurons, allowing for its additional availability in the synapses for use by the brain and other body systems. It is also quite effective because it is selective and only binds with serotonergic receptors- the ones specifically for serotonin- unlike other SSRIs. Also compared to other SSRIs, escitalopram’s efficacy as an antidepressant and the tolerability of its side effects make it have a low (around 2%) discontinuation rate.
