Equipment telematics by definition is a combination of GPS technology, diagnostic sensors and monitoring sensors to track, log and report important information via cellular networks. This vital information contains performance and operation data pertaining to each piece of equipment. The data from these telematics systems are accessed through an internet portal and breaks down the retrieved information into categories. Farm equipment has entered an era of improved technology because of telematics. The combined systems technology provided by telematics has enabled large-scale farmers and industrial businesses to manage their equipment more efficiently and limit major repairs and repair times. Telematics can help identify bad habits and unsafe practices that would otherwise go unnoticed until an accident or break-down occurred. Safety hazards that can be monitored are equipment speed, overloading of a piece of equipment and erratic movements while in operation. The hazards can lead to serious accidents causing harm to equipment and the operator. This collection of data can lead to safer worksites, a reduction in repair costs and help prevent rapid wear on the equipment. The GPS tracking allows the business to be alerted the very instant the equipment is moved from its storage facility or worksite. This same line of telematics also allows for alerts when equipment is used outside of the time limits setup for scheduled work hours. One of the most beneficial components of the GPS portion of telematics is it provides a remote shut down of the piece of equipment due to unauthorized use. Due to the farm equipment being so massive and work locations being remote, the telematics systems are helping the farming industry be more cost effective and safe. However, not only can the updated telematics provide location and diagnostic data, it is now being used for automated field operation recording. This data can tell the farmer what time he began work, what time did he finish and what work was completed. Data analysis through telematics is helping farmers all across the United States increase productivity and reduce operational costs. By making their farms for efficient, the farmers are saving money over the long haul. Farmers have options as to which telematics system they want. The basic system covers equipment tracking and diagnostic programs. The advanced system adds production recording and analysis over a set amount of time. The most expensive, full system covers the other systems and adds unlimited data storage and analysis.
