When danger approaches the eastern chipmunk tends to use sounds to alert the other chipmunks of an approaching predator. These loud pitched calls sometimes scare off predators, such as the domestic cat. Most chipmunks will stay away from danger by hiding in their burrows or underground, where most predators can not get to them. The chipmunk will take the most direct route home and carry less food after hearing an alert. They always listen and look for the predators that may want to themas they search for food. The chipmunk's most effective defense may be running away and the speed they have when they do.
