With the changes of how people look at different situations, the law had to also change. More specialized courts were created intended for more therapeutic purposes. A lot of the specialized courts focus on both drug and mental problems. Some people who use drugs are not bad people, but they are just in the wrong place. Some people with mental issues do not realize what they are doing or the effects of their actions. People with drug and mental problems should not go through the same vigorous process of those who stole or murdered.
Drug courts differ in clientele and procedure than the “typical courts.” First of all, drug courts deal with defendants with substance abuse. The main disadvantage is that some people will try and abuse the system. The drug court is supposed to be for those who need help, usually will try to get help. The people who will abuse the court are the criminals who blame their actions on the drugs. For example, Joe has been stealing for years, and he has just recently been doing drugs. Joe has started trying to steal more and more to buy the drugs he wants. He finally gets caught in the process. Should he have to go to a normal court or should he go to a drug court? If he went to a drug court, then he is getting a less harsh punishment, even though his intent was to steal in the first place before taking drugs. Another issue is the funding for the courts. Some states are reconsidering their ability to fund these courts. Without funding, there is no specialized drug court. People do not realize how much they will actually miss something until it is gone. On the other hand, mental health courts have enough funding for
