A positive aspect of this approach is that it is sure that the majority will agree with the decision. A disadvantage is that members that did not agree with the decision may not fully commit to what was chosen and may feel upset and this could cause some conflict. Another relevant disadvantage is that it can put more emphasis on quality (how many votes) than quality (is this really the right choice?).

For both the consultative and consensus approaches, a great example is how during trials the jury is consulted on what and why they think the verdict should be. Many times the judge agrees on that decision and the verdict aligns to what the jury recommended; however, other times the judge decides not to follow the recommendation and declares a totally opposite verdict. The judge consults the jury and makes an informed decision based on what they provide as a justification for their choice. In the same way, the previous example is intrinsically related to the consensus approach because, within the jury, there is a consensus on the decision made because, after careful scrutiny, analysis and discussion, they come up with a unified recommendation, that despite some finding it incorrect, they deem as

In her article, What is Groupthink?, author Kendra Cherry discusses the concept of majority opinions in order to have multiple groups of people have agreements. People argue that groupthink occurs when a group of people work together and one opposes an idea and one person does not agree with the idea. This is helpful to the group because other ideas should be brought to the table. The concept of groupthink is related to the early settler’s experience because they had to work together in order to survive the obstacles they went through. Effects of groupthink on the settlers can be seen when they had to work with the natives to survive a harsh winter.…

Discussion Questions for Part (A) 1. Is Peter Smith micromanaging Keith Schmidt? Reading this case, I believe that Peter Smith was not trying to micromanage Keith Schmidt. Conflict accrued due to Smith’s desire for his power as a chairman to be recognized and taken into consideration, rather than control Schmidt’s work. Since parties had different viewpoints on the financial abilities of the museum and the rate it should grow, they failed to cooperate to reach the results that satisfy the interests of both sides.…

For instance, in the United States Governement in the last decade congress and the house of representative has halted to a stop constantly being involved in a gridlock. Trying to find consensus could be argued is part of the culprit for the most innefective congress in the history of the United States. With innefective, I mean the last couple of congresses have not been able to pass mostly any laws. What it is important to remember is that consensus doesn't mean overrepresentation. The problem with consensus is that the party who is underrepresented be it in the congress or senate want to have equal footing on their ideals that the party that is currently in control.…

Representative democracy is when the people vote on representatives to act as a voice of the people to decide the policy initiatives, rather than having the people decide directly. Direct democracy would be the perfect form of government for a small country with educated citizens. With educated citizens, the votes will be ethical and prioritized. The embracing majority rule in my mind is an important characteristic of democracy. Although, that is not quite the case and the real standard is the plurality rule. The plurality system is the electoral process in which a candidate who polls more votes than others, is elected. It distinguished from the majority system, in which, to win, a candidate must receive more votes than all other candidates combined. The concept that although that candidate does not receive the majority of votes, the most votes in the relevant district wins the election.…

Many Americans believe a representative democracy is unfair. They believe the only truly fair way to voice opinion is through a direct democracy. But, the truth is, American citizens would not be able to function efficiently in a direct democracy because our political culture is far better suited for a representative democracy. Our form of government as a representative democracy works so well because the majority of Americans agree on the same views. Culture in America tends to be more suited for a representative democracy rather than a direct democracy because they are generally uneducated and unwilling to learn on most concerns and are more inclined to put themselves first instead of thinking of the group as a whole.…

The positive relationship between prosperity and democracy has an enduring relationship in the subject of social sciences. There are three different leadership styles with many variations in-between. The difference in these three leadership styles is the level and location of control. At one extreme is the autocratic leader, which makes independent decisions on how to proceed. On the opposite end of the spectrum there are laissez faire leaders, which have a hands-off approach and allows the subordinates to make all the decisions. However, the democratic leader is the medium of the three, which allows more input of the decision making process for his or subordinates.…
