The warm-up approach that we are using does help to put a lad’s mind into the right place, as it comes keen right from the start. I find that it also sets my backside up well for what is to follow. There is no question that Hardman took his Army Birching well. One of the reasons for this is, without doubt, that the lad is game and hard. The problem for Hardman, is that this is also a disadvantage for him, as it means that he is more likely to push the boundaries, because he has some confidence in his ability to take his punishments. A significant driver of this, is his ability to stand erect and take a severe flogging with the Army Cat himself. As you point out, he sees it as his Military Duty to lay it on properly and when he is taking a flogging, he also sees it as his Military Duty to take it properly. There is no doubt, that Captain Flog will give Staff Hardman many opportunities to take the Army Cat, which will give Staff Wilding many opportunities to hone his skills when laying it on.
