Nowadays, the success in the business world required the critical thinking skill. The critical thinking skills are the process of gathering the required information, evaluating options, analyzing, and apply solution to reach the end goal (Cantu, 2016). Thus, the critical thinking is an essential for leaders to overcome the world rapid changes and challenges (McCarthy & Carr, 2015). According to Grant and Jordan (2015), the practice of the critical thinking can include both planned/analytical and emergent approaches to strategy. This essay paper will address analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of planned/analytical and emergent approaches to strategy.

The analytical/planned approach to strategy is one of the organizational strategies that the organization can apply. This type of strategy is based on learning from past experience, intuitive, and leadership (Grant & Jordan, 2015). What distinguishes this approach is its flexibility in dealing with external factors and emergency conditions. The emergent strategy approach is not limited to solve a sudden problem, but it is also can be utilized to take advantage of unexpected opportunity in the market. This will give the organization precedence in access the new opportunities before other competitors in the market. Therefore, when organization experience unexpected or uncontrolled situation it can solve it through the emergent strategy.
