When it comes to tablets or textbooks, everyone has their own opinions. Tablets have many advantages, but depending on how one uses them, may have a negative impact on a student’s grade or focus. Students can get distracted very easily by the things around them. Not to mention, tablets have many apps that students could be on during class. Also, there are many health problems that relate to tablets. As a matter of fact, tablets make it easier for students to cheat and/or cut corners on work. Not only are tablets difficult to use for students and/or teachers but also the difficulty of having to be connected to the internet. Therefore, with using a tablet in a classroom, the students have the access to do anything they want. With the advancement of technology, tablets have formed into a tool that can be used for everyone’s discretion. With the access to the internet that it provides, it is seemingly easier to get distracted from school work, or work in general. One may find that it is more appealing to watch videos or listen to music than to finish essays or do more research on a project.While a teacher is having the students work on the tablet, the students could be playing games. It is difficult for a teacher to monitor every child’s activities constantly. However, they are also a great source when it comes to finding information quickly and efficiently. A tablet can provide all the information from millions of documents and books, that would have been nearly impossible to look through on one’s own. On the contrary, students can be on many apps that will distract them from their work, which is usually the case when it comes to younger children. Email is a great tool to connect with friends, but some students use this to email their friends during class, distracting from their homework. Students are tempted to be on the Web while they should be working, as it is much more appealing to relax and have fun than to finish projects. Staring at a tablet’s screen, depending on the length of time and brightness, can damage a person’s eyes. Tablet’s can also cause headaches, blurred vision, and drowsiness if used for long periods of time (Klindt 1). While tablets can cause damage to children’s vision and brain, it also affects adults and older people. There was a report written by the American Optometric Association that suggested that students using or that have used tablets have an increased risk of computer vision syndrome (1). These symptoms include headaches, blurred vision, neck pain, fatigue, eye strain, dry eyes, irritated eyes, double vision, vertigo/dizziness, polyopia, and difficulty refocusing the eyes (1). On top of these risks, there is an even higher risk for carpal tunnel syndrome (Klindt 1). “Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that causes numbness, tingling and other symptoms in the hand and arm.” (“Carpal Tunnel Syndrome” 1). Neck and back problems can also be caused from the use of tablets (Klindt 1). Long-term use of tablets can have harmful effects on students. This could potentially lead to musculoskeletal disorders. Musculoskeletal disorder is a disorder that affects the human body’s movement (Middlesworth 1). This disorder associates with strains on the muscles in a body (1).
