The Lincoln Memorial was constructed to idolize the death of Abraham Lincoln and the great achievements he did. To begin with, Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, in Kentucky. Lincoln grew up as a poor boy on the frontier. Not having lots of formal education Lincoln would read books and study Shakespeare, Byron, and even Euclid's geometry. A man of hard work Lincoln worked as a store clerk, a river trader, and a “rail-splitter”. So most people consider Lincoln as having a strong work ethic. Lincoln, later on, realized that with his passion for the love of the written word and a strong work ethic, he pursued a legal career, then a political one from the Illinois state legislature to the U.S. Congress. Because the memorial was to be built on drained and filled land, extra care had to be taken with the foundation for such a massive structure” (NPS Lincoln Memorial). The memorial was mainly made out of marble, granite, limestone, and concrete. There also are decorative murals painted on the tops of the south and north walls and the Gettysburg Address and the Second Inaugural are carved into the stone beneath the paintings. All the materials that Henry Bacon chose, tell a very specific story. “A country torn apart by war can come together, not only to build something beautiful but also explain the reunification of the states” (NPS Lincoln Memorial). On April 1917 worked slowed down because the United States entered World War 1. There was a shortage of materials and labor but the building never stopped. Then in 1918, all parties agreed that the Lincoln Statue had to be double in size so it wouldn’t look lost in the building. On January 20, 1980, the statue of Lincoln was assembled and completed. After, “roadways and walks were built. Trees and shrubberies were planted, lawns seeded, and huge, old boxwoods were transplanted to the memorial grounds” (NPS Lincoln Memorial). Finally, on May 30, 1922, they installed the pool and the interior lighting but it wasn’t finished until years
