Advantage Of Nuclear Energy

Nuclear Energy is cost effective, safer for humans and the environment when compared to other sources of alternative energy, and is necessary to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. “The cost of producing nuclear-generated electricity in 2007 was 1.7 cents per kilowatt-hour, compared with 2.4 cents for coal, 6.7 cents for natural gas and 10.2 cents for oil. In other words, the cost of nuclear-generated electricity was nearly one-third less than power produced at a natural gas plant. And given the sharp rise in oil and gas prices so far this year, nuclear power 's advantage has widened.” (Nolan E. Hertel) This Professor of Nuclear and Radiological Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology used inarguable fact to state how Nuclear energy is …show more content…
Fission is then larger sized atoms are split in a controlled nuclear reaction and heat is formed to boil water and create steam. This steam then is put through a turbine and produces electricity. This effective process is effective and relatively cheap comparatively. “Nuclear power represents approximately 20 percent of the total electric generating capacity in the U.S. with 104 nuclear plants currently operating.” (The Committee on Science and Technology) Every source of energy to power the world 's electricity is going to be expensive. The numbers can make Nuclear energy sound terrible, but it is the cheapest form of energy that we have to this date. It may be because our country and other countries are not using Nuclear energy as much as other forms of energy, but it is the most productive when looked upon from a scientific standpoint. “The fission process is caused by neutrons in the reactor core and both liberates considerable energy and produces more neutrons. The energy released is 1 million watt-days per gram of U-235 that undergoes fission, equivalent to 2.5 million times the energy released in burning one gram of coal.”(John Deutch, Professor …show more content…
This source of alternative energy is biased even before understood just because of its title. People associate Nuclear energy/power with Nuclear bomb and automatically assume that it is not a safe form of energy. Living near a Nuclear Power plant could seem alarming to some people, but it actually isn’t as harmful as you would think. People worry about the radiation regarding nuclear power, but “Emissions of radiation from nuclear power plants are carefully monitored and controlled. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), nuclear power plant operations account for less than one-hundredth (1/100) of a percent of the average American’s total radiation exposure.” United States Nuclear Power Plants protect the peoples’ safety and the workers safety. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, it is safer to work at a Nuclear Power Plant then it is to work at a fast food restaurant, or a grocery store. “The evidence over six decades shows that nuclear power is a safe means of generating electricity. The risk of accidents in nuclear power plants is low and declining. The consequences of an accident or terrorist attack are minimal compared with other commonly accepted risks.” (World Nuclear Association) As time passes by, technology increases more and more each day, and radiation caused by Nuclear Power Plants are
