Back in the Middle Ages, Medieval Britain was organized around a system of Feudalism. The country was not governed by the king, but instead by individual lords, also known as barons. These lords or so called barons administered their own estates, dispensed their own justice, minted their own money, levied taxes and tolls, and demanded military service from vassals. Feudalism in short was a relationship of obligation and mutual service between vassals and lords. A vassal held his land, or fief, as a grant from the lord. When the empire fell, there were no laws protecting them, so they turned to the lords to keep the peace and to act on their behalf. This willingness to be ruled by the lords led to the beginnings of feudalism. Some peasants were free, but most became serfs to the lord. This meant that they were required to stay with the land and pay very high rent to the lord. B)Describe the music of the time period and its importance. Music in the medieval times was an important part of everyday life. Music was often used during celebration and festivities, it was played during the holidays and special parties also. Uplifting music was especially played at weddings and birthdays. Music that invoked a romantic atmosphere was played on Valentine's Day. Recorders, horns, trumpets, whistles, bells, and drums were some of the many medieval music instruments at the time. The importance of music was different for every occasion, for example on May Day, it was believed by dancing to a specially prepared high pitched music would awaken the hibernating spirits and forewarned that spring had arrived. During Christmas, the sound of bells brought the good news of Jesus’ birth to the listeners. It was also believed in those days music help digestion of food hence, the reason for music at mealtimes.
