Over a quarter century ago, breast imaging has undergone continuous evolution since the introduction of the mammogram. More established modalities have been developed as breast imaging is continuously progressing new modalities and advances in applications. By improving efficacy in minimizing the morbidity and mortality, these improved technologies have helped in individualize evaluation of breast lesion as well as a treatment too.
However in mammogram which is its inadequate detection of breast cancer in women with dense breast tissue being the limitation. Mammography detects approximately 90% of tumors in women over 50, but only 60% of tumors in women under the age of 50. Plus, lack of specificity, where mammography also …show more content…
These systems mostly offer capabilities not provided by screen-film mammography. Its ability to use a variety of tools to manipulate the images has become one of the most attractive features offered by this digital mammography. Many features such as the brightness and contrast can be adjusted, images can be inverted, and digital magnification can be applied to selected regions of the image [1]. The advantage of digital mammography also provides more benefits over screen-film mammography. The advantages are including that the images are insensitive to exposure variations, so retakes can be minimized, reduces exam times, image processing provides improved visibility from the chest wall to the skin line. It is also reduces storage space requirements and transfers information more …show more content…
Even though, the basic philosophy of scintimammography and PET images are similar but the drugs used are different and the gamma ray energies emitted are also different so the physical cameras work on quite different principles. The resolution of scintimammography is more inferior to that of PET which is on the order scintimammography is 5-10 mm and PET is 3-5 mm respectively.
However, there is no clear consensus on which of these nuclear methods is superior. But usually PET systems offer higher resolution in the image. Unfortunately, PET examinations are extremely expensive, and they are not widely available. Meanwhile, scintimammography is a procedure that can be done at virtually in every hospital in the Europe country. The best part in PET tracer is thought to directly measure metabolism and so the biology of PET images is better understood, but the tracer shows poor specificity in separating tumor recurrence from surgical scarring than in scintimammography.
In term of the safety concern, there is none of the included studies reported for any adverse events associated with the use of molecular breast imaging or scintimammography since this technique is invasive procedure [20]. But yet due to the use of radiopharmaceuticals would not be suitable for use in pregnant
