There are laws specific to each state in the country regarding the prescribing of medications and therapeutic devices by medical professionals. The state of Ohio allows Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) the ability to prescribe under specific conditions. The Certified Nurse Practitioner (CNP), Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), Nurse Midwife (CNM) and Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) may obtain a certificate to prescribe after successfully completing a graduate degree in the specialty that leads to national certification from an organization recognized by the Ohio Board of Nursing (Ohio Board of Nursing, 2016). An Advanced Pharmacology course from an accredited educational institution must be successfully completed, as well as advanced courses in Pathophysiology and health assessment. The pharmacology course must be forty-five contact hours, minimally. The purpose of the course is to establish safe and effective prescription of medications and therapeutic devices. The course content must include pharmokinetics and clinical uses; drug principles regarding disease prevention and health maintenance; monetary and ethical implications of drug prescription; and federal and state laws that apply to the authority to prescribe (Ohio Board of Nursing, …show more content…
These drugs are included on the formulary found at http://www.nursing.ohio.gov/Practice-CTP.htm. However, The APRN cannot prescribe schedule II drugs from any convenience care clinic (Ohio Board of Nursing, 2016). The medications listed in the formulary, which the APRN may prescribe relative to the scope of specialization of practice include nutritional, hematologic, endocrine, metabolic, cardiovascular, renal, respiratory, central nervous system, gastrointestinal, anti-infective, immunologic, dermatologic, ophthalmic, otic and antineoplastic
