Abstract
Nurses have played an important role in the medical field for a long time. Nurses began to further their knowledge and capabilities which led to Advance Practice Nurse. This Research Paper describes advance practice in nursing from almost 50 years ago to how it has progress today. Including how advance practice has impacted the medical field and patient outcome. In the 1960s, Nurse Practitioners were defined as health care providers who can serve a combination of needs (Keeling,2015). Then came the first Clinical Nurse Specialist program which was in psychiatric nursing in 1954 by Peplau at Rutgers University (Sheer et al.,2008). With these developing advanced practices in nursing came complication. The nursing profession was having difficulty defining itself, and its boundaries. Since the increase in medical technology, scientific progress in medicine/ surgery, and of hospitals after World War II, majority of nurses were found working in hospital with direct supervisions. At this time, the nursing profession boundaries were defined as there was no need for nurses to diagnose and prescribe. The American Nursing Association (ANA) definition of nursing that was published in 1955 reinforced that nurses were not to diagnose or prescribe. It had seemed that ANA was trying to clarify what nurses can and cannot do but this definition of nursing had affected nursing autonomy in practice setting which in area nursing has been providing care for a long time (Keeling, …show more content…
The case took place in Missouri where the state medical board claimed that two women Nurse Practitioners were practicing medicine without a license. In the end, the Missouri Supreme Court overturned the decision, concluding that “the scope of practice of advance practice nurses could evolve without statutory constraints.” The outcome of this case also made clarification of new state nurse practice acts addressed issues related to APN practice and allowing the expansion of APNs roles and functions
