The role of the Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) has two key dimensions in the healthcare arena. The first is knowledge management that includes generating evidence, gathering different types of knowledge, synthesizing knowledge, and interpreting and determining how to apply this knowledge. The second dimension is to promote the endorsement of knowledge by building the competencies of frontline nurses, engaging with nurses in problem solving and facilitating changes required to encourage best-practice guidelines. APNs can significantly contribute to developing successful social media initiatives, and also creating leadership opportunities for nurses. In addition to promoting their own health, nurses can use social media across all domains of their profession to expand nursing knowledge and facilitate best practices. They can also help to engage and encourage peers to use technology, thus becoming teachers and advocates for technology in their areas. “Advanced practice nurses’ expertise in their clinical specialty and their credibility with clinical nurses means that they are uniquely placed to act as knowledge brokers in facilitating the link between evidence and practice”(Gerrish, et al., 2011). APN’s are trained in efficiently synthesizing research surrounding the ethical use of social media and utilize this information to present best practice support to the frontline nurses, there by providing a basis for the practicing nurse to ethically use social media.
