Advanced Leadership Reflection

My leadership philosophies remain the same as I reflect on my experience with the Advance Leadership Course (ALC). I still stand firm in my belief that leaders create effective leaders not followers. Two months with my peers provided an opportunity to network and share experiences about our new career. I avoided listening to naysayers and doubters about ALC leading up my departure. I arrived with a positive attitude, thirsty for knowledge. I was already comfortable being a leader of soldiers. The challenge was remembering everything I had learned from my training in Pensacola, Fl. The first month of ALC was fantastic, as I learned about analytical, critical and creative thinking. A topic I find extremely valuable with my career. …show more content…
As a Cryptologic Network Warfare NCO, my training leading up to ALC was substandard. In fact, the entire class had less than a year in this new MOS. Couple this with our SGL debacle and you have a recipe for failure. Our profession requires skills that are perishable if not used daily. Less than a year after my MOS training, I arrived to my unit and immediately became a squad leader. This was great, but my days are now filled with soldier duties, not my MOS. I’m not alone as my classmates have the same issues. I sadly admit that I was not properly prepared for the second half of ALC. This was my biggest frustration. Most of the ALC material was outdated and several of the exercise didn’t work. It also didn’t help that our new SGL wasn’t familiar with most of the material. We spent most of the time just speculating and guessing. I regretfully have to return to my unit with a half empty tool belt. On a positive note, I am now motivated to regain my interest in cyber. I refuse to let my skills and knowledge dissipate. Life is about survival and learning everything you can without regret or remorse. I’ll continue to take care of soldiers, but I will now become more aggressive and selfish in my training as I see clearly that this is

The Senior Leader Course (SLC) reinforced in me the true meaning General Al Gray’s Grayism, “Don’t be afraid to learn from others” (Otte, 2015). The greatest learning opportunity in SLC came from my fellow classmates and their fearlessness in sharing their personal and professional experiences. If I could transport this class back in time one year and know what I know now, I would have been better able to assist one of my Soldiers whose service was reviewed under the Army’s Qualitative Management Program (QMP). Many of my classmates impressed me with their experience, both their technical skills while deployed and their compassion for Soldiers while fulfilling their duties as senior non-commissioned officers (NCO). I learned the most from…

I am an RA at Northern Kentucky University. As an RA, I help students transition to college and help them understand how to live on their own away from parents. It is my duty to enforce University Housing policy- to ensure the safety of students plus maintain a positive learning environment. As an RA, I have developed a unique set of skills because I get to work with students to ensure they are receiving a full well rounded college experience while enforcing rules that some tend to break. This can be challenging because I still have to live with them unlike police; for example, they get to go home after they interact with someone so they don’t have to deal with it when their job is over.…

Introduction As I reflect on this course and the results of the Questionnaires, Reflection, and Action Worksheets I have learned many aspects of leadership. I have analyzed the definition of leadership and now have a clearer understanding of it. According to, Introduction to Leadership; concepts and practice, by Peter Northouse (2015), leadership can be composed of many variables such as relationship, trait, ability, skill, behavior, and influence process. He also elaborates on how the “leadership of an individual can be used to influence a group to accomplish a common goal”. In addition, he discusses how leadership is not the same as management (Northouse, 2015, pp. 3-7).…

I was fortunate enough to attend the 2016 H. W. Sumners Leadership Conference where I would have the opportunity to meet a unique pool of influential individuals. Most of my leadership experiences had come from group projects with students who I were familiar with, and the conference gave me the chance to become a team with strangers from across the United States and Mexico. I was not aware of how much I was actually going to get out of the conference. Through the elective workshops, I learned much more about my leadership style and who I could become as a leader. Through the speakers, I learned about the power of creating a vision and pursuing with unyielding faith.…
