Advanced Leader Course (ALC)

I can’t believe that we are almost done with the Advanced Leader Course (ALC). I must say, it was a wonderful learning experience. I learned from all the Small Group leaders and my fellow classmate and their respective experiences. I can proudly say that I am a better soldier and leader today comparing to when I first came to the Non-Commissioned Officer Academy (NCOA). ALC been a great opportunity for me to totally change my view of managing and leading Soldiers effectively.
Leadership is a very important and key element in the Army and to make a better and strong Army, we need high quality and competitive leaders and schools like ALC are the foundation and start line for a better and strong Army. I have learned a lot during my limited time in NCOA and specifically in ALC. I came into ALC with little to no motivation and no eagerness to learn but the lesson plans and classroom environment opened my mind. The lesson plans and subjects we learned in ALC added to my overall knowledge of Army and leadership abilities. This school thought me how to use my abilities and skills as a leader and better take care of my Soldiers in my unit.

Effective communication and critical thinking are the other skills I sharped in the ALC. Also, this class improved my briefing skills and ability to stand in front of a group of people and talk to them about different subjects. The NCO week expanded my knowledge about leadership and key role we play as Non-Commissioned Offers in the Army. The briefing, we received from Training and Doctrine Command Sergeant Major Davenport certainly opened my vision on how to approach soldiers and resolve their problems as he stated “I am talking to you all not at you

One of the most important extracurricular activities I have been a leader in is the JROTC program. This program has provided me with so many opportunities, whether it be to learn about myself or to serve others. For example, my involvement with the color guard helped me develop confidence in my abilities, and therefore helped me learn valuable leadership skills I would later apply to being commander of the team, then personnel adjutant, and ultimately battalion commander. Through being mentored and encouraged by others, I discovered I had the potential to be a leader. As a result of my involvement in the program, I have become more self-confident, and among other things, I have learned the importance of turning failures into success.…

The Senior Leader Course (SLC) reinforced in me the true meaning General Al Gray’s Grayism, “Don’t be afraid to learn from others” (Otte, 2015). The greatest learning opportunity in SLC came from my fellow classmates and their fearlessness in sharing their personal and professional experiences. If I could transport this class back in time one year and know what I know now, I would have been better able to assist one of my Soldiers whose service was reviewed under the Army’s Qualitative Management Program (QMP). Many of my classmates impressed me with their experience, both their technical skills while deployed and their compassion for Soldiers while fulfilling their duties as senior non-commissioned officers (NCO). I learned the most from…

“The magic happens when you step outside your comfort zone.” This proverb sums up everything I went through when I recently attended the Air Force Academy’s Summer Seminar in July. While there, I was pushed well beyond my limits. We, the attendees, did strenuous physical training sessions at roughly a mile above sea level, woke up before the sun rose, attended sample classes, and studied tons of military knowledge while learning about the Air Force Academy and the admission process. It was truly a challenge being there, and I loved every minute of it!…

I gained a respect for hard work as well as an ideology of looking out for those around me. The sacrifices they took to send me to private school and ensure that I do well in life motivates me in my plans for the future. It is their inability to live their lives as they pleased and follow their dreams that inspires me to attend and graduate from an institution in which all those attending strive in their fields of study. Due to their dedication, I want to succeed in life and provide a better life for both myself and my family, allowing them to live the rest of their lives without worry, as well as making a difference in the world around me.…
