Advanced Concert Band: A Mistake In Music

Improved Essays
One mistake in music is a failure, and I strive to have everything perfect in music. This ambition to have everything perfect is a result from my audition to Advanced Concert Band. Being able to perform with the Advanced Concert Band was a dream of mine ever since I experienced what a real ensemble can display. The day was upon me faster than I could ever have imagined. Knowing the standards that Mr. Macrina expects from everyone made the audition much more tense. One mistake in the music would be a failure, resulting in a denial to be part of the ensemble. My skill level was insufficient to those standards put forth by him and as a result, I was not accepted into the Advanced Concert Band on trumpet. That failure was the catalyst for who I am today as both a student and a musician. After the list of names were called for the people who were accepted, disappointment and frustration filled my body. This was mainly a result from my own regret knowing all I needed to do was to practice more and take music seriously. Apart from my negative emotions, acceptance soon followed due to that regret. I accepted the faults in my performance …show more content…
In that moment, I became a completely different student and musician. I became dedicated and disciplined not only in music, but in academics as well. My ambition to perfect everything had increased substantially. My entire mindset of what I believed was correct, was completely changed. If my work ethic could be represented in numbers, my entire work ethic had increased exponentially. My entire attitude towards work in general, whether it be for academics or musical performance, had become more mature. Although failure can be upsetting or even discouraging, it can be used as a wonderful learning experience. Failure at some point is inevitable, but it you have to make the most of it. I have been fortunate enough to be the drum major for my school’s marching band both my junior and senior year. We have yet to start competitions this year, but last year was not ideal for me as a leader or the band as a whole. We start rehearsals for our competition show at the end of June; this is usually about two weeks after the school year has ended.…

With my elementary band students, I only use two types of assessment which are formative and summative. The formative assessments that I use in my classes are the weekly playing test. When we are learning a new song I map out the more difficult sections of the music and require my students to practice those sections and be able to perform them by the end of the week. This is an ongoing struggle because with students that are in elementary school they are not focused on being a great musician. It would be a miracle if they even touched their instruments outside of school.…

Despite its difficulty, I felt that I would be able to perform it well.…

I learned the need to work well in advance of the deadline. Musical details may be different than academic details, but just as slight differences in tone and pitch can completely change the music’s meaning, every detail, regardless of how small, matters in all subjects. Whether it’s a math problem or a novel, my heightened attention to detail helps me to better identify the correct steps or the overall theme. As high-school progressed it became more and more evident that relying on natural abilities doesn’t equate to achieving…
