Having already earned my Bachelor 's degree in Mathematics and Masters of Education Degree, I felt the Lord leading me to a Mathematics Specialist certification. I am open to any opportunity that the Lord would have me go. I feel honored to have found Liberty’s online program in this area.
The 2013 Advanced Competency Assessment for a Mathematics Specialist includes thirteen standards of competencies for the mathematics teacher. Each standard is weighted as Met: distinguished, advanced, proficient, or Not Met: unsatisfactory, or no evidence. There are no descriptions concerning the levels of attainment, so deciding on my ability was rather difficult. In my summary of this document, I will separate the standards according to my perceived degree

I feel as though I understand the College and Career Readiness Standards but still have much to learn. I receive regular updates from several professional organizations but rarely have the time to read through those updates. I know that I could do a better job at keeping up with those current trends in mathematics as well as teaching math. I understand the importance of technology in the mathematics classroom. I feel that it is my responsibility to provide students with the opportunities to demonstrate their ability various forms of technology. First, I feel that students should be proficient at using a variety of calculators including scientific and graphing. Students should also be proficient with using any Google interface in turning in assignments as well as collaborating with other students. Lessons and activities should rely on the appropriate technology when necessary. I feel as though I have a variety of tools and strategies to teach diverse learners. I am certainly more proficient that when I began teaching. However, there are several times throughout the academic year that I feel pressured to cover the material for the standardized test and rely heavily on direct instruction. I have worked hard throughout my 12 years of being in the classroom to design units that are customized and contain a variety of activities that appeal to the diverse learner and various ability levels. I feel as though I can still make some improvements and will continually strive to do

Part B: During the children’s early years, they learn that mathematics helps people making sense of their environments through play, investigations, real-life situations, and focused learning experiences. Children come to school with different experiences about mathematics (Anghileri, 2006; Yelland, Butler, & Diezmann, 1999). Many children enjoy singing number names, identifying how big objects and people are, labelling shapes, and using their developing mathematical understandings to think and reason (Reys, Lindquist, Lambdin, Smith, Rogers, Falle, Frid, & Bennett, 2012; Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers, 1997). In the education system there is a framework describing the children’s mathematical development and expected levels…

Part B Diagnostic Interview and Tutoring Sessions Permission was granted (Appendix A) to interview and tutor Athena*, who is a 9 year old student in Year 4 who returned to Australia in the middle of Year 3, after living in the United States for 5 years. The Mathematics Assessment Interview (MAI) was conducted on a weekend afternoon at Athena’s home shortly after lunch (Australian Catholic University, 2011b). She did not seem to be nervous and was informed that the purpose of the questions was to help a pre-service teacher learn and develop some effective ways of teaching through the follow up tutoring sessions. Athena began the MAI confidently and could read, write (on the calculator) and order two digit numbers with ease.…

The strategies she adopted included clearly articulating learning targets that are aligned with state standards, using data to provide targeted intervention(s), tracking student learning and giving formative assessments. Teachers also included the relevance and real world connection that can be made by what they are learning. By the end of the third year of implementing these strategies, students showed an increase in passing rates in most subjects. Students also showed an increased understanding of the standards themselves. Brennan also found that the students that made the most gains had teachers who posted graphic organizers in their classrooms which described the new standards and learning targets to be taught in each unit of study (Brennan, 2015).…

Standards of Learning Testing, or SOL Testing, is used in the state of Virginia to measure whether or not a student meets the minimum requirement for what they should know in core subjects in school like Math, Science, History, and English. These tests are not accurate because it does not measure the amount of knowledge that a student has on a particular subject but the amount of the material the students can apply on test day. Students begin taking SOL’s in the third grade and over the course of their school career they may take approximately 34 different tests that are required for a student to pass by meeting the minimum passing score. Children start taking SOLs in the third grade and review four years worth of core subject material and…

In 2008, the Hunt Institute for Educational Leadership and the National Governors Association organized a meeting to discuss new education standards for the United States (Common Core Timeline). From that conference came the idea of the Common Core State Standards Initiative, often shortened to “Common Core.” About one year later, the United States officially adopted the education guidelines (Common Core Timeline). After the Common Core’s implementation, American parents and educators realized how problematic the standards could become, particularly the mathematics. Common Core math standards set a developmentally complex curriculum, lack college-preparatory mathematics, and can eventually hinder U.S. competition with the rest of the world.…

Appropriately specific brief summary of MCK Test results. It was during week three that I completed the Mathematical Content Knowledge (MCK) test for the purposes of determining my level of understanding relating to certain mathematical concepts, such as multiplication, division, addition, and place value (Curtin, 2014). Before starting, I felt overly confident in my ability to successfully answer all the questions within the quiz, however, it was not until I skimmed through the questions that I began to think otherwise. The beliefs in myself concerning mathematics is one of duality: I know that I am more than capable of solving complex questions, yet I am also conscious of my lacking motivation behind the subject itself which stems from…

As of July 2010, 42 states including North Carolina, adopted the Common Core, and since then there has been quite if has been beneficial or not for our education system. The Common Core State Standards were written in order to put forward consistent learning goals regardless of where the student lives. To put in simple terms have each student on the same level as the next student. However, for some states, the Common Core Standards are much more rigorous than the previous expectations.…

“The CCCS document and supporting appendices say very little about accommodating students with disabilities, only that some students may need extra supports to achieve competency. The purpose of the standards is to establish minimum grade-level competency expectations” (Haager, & Vaughn, 2013). If music teachers, art teachers, and special education classrooms are required to have students meet grade-level expectations regarding ELA and Math standard, new curriculum will be needed for all classrooms; however, modification can be provided with extra instructional material. Classrooms may need to update their technology to keep up with the changes to lesson plans and be prepared for changes that may be reformed by the drafters of the Common Core State Standards. Teachers, administrators, and supporting staff will need to undergo more professional development to ensure standards are being met.…
