Adv 101 Student Observation

I had the opportunity observe Ann Hideko Ohkawa’s presentation as part of ADV 101 course. ADV 101 is an advising course strongly recommended for freshman students and required for transfer students. This class meets every other week with a different topic as the subject. For that week CAPS (counseling and psychological services) was invited to teach meditation. Ann, working as an intern at CAPS, was responsible for introducing the students to the class before an instructor started meditation. She was also responsible to give some concluding remarks before the class was dismissed. She introduced students to meditation by talking about its background and benefits for about ten minutes. She led a discussion-oriented introduction. For example,

No plagiarism detected We were a high strung group of kids and more often than not my teacher would walk into class with us in tow crying our eyes out for what ever reason. Whether we were stressed out or just having a bad day we never failed to cry at least once a week in AP World History class. Because of this my wonderful teacher came up with a solution. He proposed that since we were a bunch of cry babies who could barely make it through a quiz before the water works started up that everyday at the end of class we would meditate.…

This is particularly important to Theravada Buddhism, mainly because it is dependent upon the teachings of the monastical community. When the teachings of the Buddha and monks can reach a much larger audience and be adopted by individuals with no previous experience of Buddhism, the actual input from the Sangha can be limited, their message warping to be accepted into today’s society. Wilson showcases how mindfulness, first developed by monks as a practice of meditation in the Noble Eightfold Path, was altered into a cultural norm to adapt to the American culture. This alters how individual can understand Buddhism, newer interpretations mixing with the traditional methods to form a completely new method of understanding. Wilson expertly crafts the evolution of mindfulness as a Buddhist doctrine and American ideal by analyzing how mindfulness was interpreted and presented by Buddhist teachings.…

On November 17, 2015, I was able to attend the IPE Campus Activity held in the old gym. This event consists of all health professional students attending Long Island University, Brooklyn Campus. I believe there were close to 500 students that attended the IPE event. The students were separated into teams of various health professions. The group I was part of consisted of three pharmacists, a respiratory care therapist, an occupational therapist, a physical therapist, two nurses, the facilitator (who is a physical therapist as well), and myself with a public health profession.…

Mrs. Hester’s presentation on mindfulness to me was a very intelligent well thought out presentation, because she knew what she was doing and obviously had practice with it before she presented her techniques and skills to us. This presentation was very calming and to me calm is bad. I hate being calm and the idea of being still literally kills my anxiety. I enjoyed the presentation altogether because she had a certain energy that seemed like it was radiating from her. Mrs. Hester was very passionate about what she was doing, and a very good teacher about neurology.…

If the school is not performing well in attendance or score reports especially in the sciences, then it leads to believe that there is a lack of incentives, attraction to learn from teachers, or even attend school. This could lead to less educational ambition and less opportunity for these low income students. Aside from student behavior impacting student learning, one other problem Kensington HSA has is some of the lowest proficiency rankings for the Pennsylvania State Keystone Exams. The Keystone exams are standardized test scores that evaluate student’s comprehension of what they are taught in the classroom and how they rank compared to other students in the state. In 2014-2015 KHSA had reported a 3% passing rate in Algebra 1, a 1% passing…

Spiritual Retreat Reflection Paper James K. Cameron Crown College When I first read through the syllabus for this class and saw that the assignment for a six to eight-hour spiritual retreat, I felt somewhat overwhelmed and apprehensive. I had never participated in a spiritual retreat of that length on my own (previously together with other staff members), and I honestly was not sure how to even go about the retreat by myself. I spoke with my mentor, Senior Pastor, previously during two mentor meetings, about some different aspects of the upcoming retreat. Some of the crucial points that I would be focusing on with the Lord during the retreat had come up during these sessions. Issues of acceptance, identity, self-worth, and surrender were all areas that I wanted to spend time with the Lord in prayer and in scripture reading.…

My experience with the positive psychology course this semester has been overwhelmingly enriching, and I have been able to apply course topics and related research findings to my own life. I had a small notion of what positive psychology was before this semester. However, learning more about different research studies and their findings has helped me see positive psychology as its own force in the science of psychology. Course assignments have helped me understand, retain, and apply the positive psychology principles to my own behavior and perspective, as well. Regarding course assignments for this paper, I will keep my focus on the major assignments throughout the semester, as I feel that these in particular have had the most substantial effect…

I took two classes for the summer of 2016, but the Interpersonal Communication class had me worried the most. I had a training with the army, and that required me to absence from school for two weeks. Unlike my other class, I didn’t have a chance to work ahead of the class with the instructor for the two weeks that I would be missing. Therefore, I was worried that I wouldn’t catch up with my classmates and end up failing the class. However, Ms. Anna was generous and extended the assignment due date for me; she even gave me an extra-credit assignment to replace the credits that I missed during my two weeks in training.…

Impressed as if by the Sullivan’s speech our instructor set the timer for ten minutes for the “easy” way of meditation and then five minutes for the “easier” way of meditation. Being interested by my fellow members speech myself, I asked my friend beside me the reason that she meditates.
