The impacts of adults who grew up in poverty, can affect them greatly in life. Only three developed countries have a higher poverty rate than the US. These impacts include; learned helplessness, a person's overall health, and they have a higher chance of remaining in poverty.
The greatest effect on kids who grew up in poverty is learned helplessness. It is “a condition in which a person suffers from a sense of powerlessness from persistent failure”. Say that a person goes their entire life never once completing this certain task they would sooner or later develop learned helplessness. In the year 2014, 46.7 million people were considered to live in poverty granted that they will not all have this illness but, they do have a greater risk for developing this risk over time. People that are considered “poor” have more extrapersonal problems rather than intrapersonal problems. Some examples are they tend to act out more and are more aggressive than the average person. Teachers and parents across America have taken countless note to this trend and they try to help as much as possible. When it comes to the physical health the “poor” struggled in that area also. Only 30% of kids who were poor were found to be unhealthy, whereas 23% of middle class or higher was considered to be unhealthy. In addition kids who were considered poor had a 32% risk of getting diabetes, asthma, and having problems with speech, hearing, and vision.
